One of the key marketing characteristics in the 1990s and 2000s is companies trying to gain sustainable competitive advantages through brands. Brands are one of the most invaluable assets a company has to compete efficiently and effectively against competitors. So every company endeavors to build strong brands. In the academic field, much research has been done on brands such as on brand equity and on brand extension. But there has been relatively few empirical studies done on how to build strong brands. Building strong brands can be defined is now branding. Branding is an effort to make products more meaningful to consumers. In general, branding efforts to build a strong brand can be accomplished through the initial choice of positive brand elements such as the brand name and logo, and marketing programs that forge favorable, strong and unique associations in the consumers's mind between the brand and its attributes/benefits. And, while there was some research done on marketing communication programs to build strong brands, however, little research has been done on consumer responses to the selection and combination of specific brand elements.
This study pays attention to the selection and combination of a brand name and symbol, and also looks at the product knowledge effects on branding. The purpose of this study is to investigate the consumer's attitudinal and behavioral responses to the brand name relevancy and symbol expectancy, and product knowledge effects of branding focused on brand name relevancy and symbol expectancy. Prior research related to relevancy and expectancy was focused on awareness responses such as recall and recognition. So they ignored consumer's affective and emotional responses. Here, the measured dependent variables are consumers' attitude toward the brand logo, brand image, product quality evaluation and their purchase intention.
The hypotheses developed in this study are as follows.
First, the response of consumer evaluation on branding will vary depending on from the level of brand name relevancy. When brand name relevancy is high, consumer response will be more positive as compared to the low condition.
Second, the response of consumer evaluation on branding will vary depending on the level of brand symbol expectancy. When brand symbol expectancy is moderate, consumer response on branding will be more positive as compared to high and low conditions. Also high brand symbol expectancy will lead to more positive response as compared to low expectancy. Third, the response of consumer evaluation on brand name relevancy and symbol expectancy will vary depending on the level of product knowledge by consumers.
The research approach used in this study is the survey method based between-subjects experimental design. The subjects were 607 respondents who lived in Seoul and Daejeon, and were selected by a judgmental sampling method.
The data were analyzed using ANOVA. The results of the study are as follows.
First, there were significant differences in consumer response of branding between brand name relevancy groups. Branding response is more positive in the high brand name relevancy group. Second there were relatively significant differences in consumer response of branding among symbol expectancy groups.
Branding response is more effective to moderate symbol expectancy group as compared to the low and high ones. Third, no significant statistical differences in consumer response of branding were found between the different product knowledge groups. Also no significant interaction effects were found between brand name relevancy, symbol expectancy and the level of consumer's product knowledge.
In conclusion, this study suggests that brand name relevancy and brand symbol expectancy are very significant variables to build strong brand and to maximize the consumer's positive responses towards branding.
