We can talk about a poem because we have a common basis on which we can communicate in poetry. This common basis means the primary shared point that a poet sympathizes with an object and thus a reader joins the process of sympathy through a poem. This is the consistent basis on which I wrote this essay and at the center of it is Bachelard's thinking. The issue here is to clarity how a poet and an object, and a poem and a reader interact with each other. What makes this interaction possible in poetry is the existence of poetic images and their effects. In other words, the meaning of a poem is embodied in poetic images and expanded to others through them. A subject and an object are involved in the process and the way of a subject toward an object and the way of an object toward a subject overlaps. To clarify the features of this overlapping through the motions of poetic images is the primary goal of this essay. Of course, this exploration is premised on epistemology, psychology, and linguistics. If it is pursued separately, there could a danger of abstracting poetry. Thus, this discussion should be carried out within the motions of poetic images from the outset.
The most basic theory on the relationship between poetic images and objects is to explain it as a part of perceptual process. A theory that a 'phantasma' arises from a sensory organ and reproduction of this is the mechanism of art is originated in Plato and Aristotle. From this basis are derived 'mental images', 'imagism', and an emphasis on 'sensual language'. This understanding falls into the error of setting limits on the diversity of poetic images and the activeness of human mind that is manifested through poetic images. Poetic images matters not because they acquire clarity of senses but because they show the close integration of perception of an object and mental function. The activeness and diversity of poetic images require functions other than in perception. They are two intermediaries, imagination and language. Through imagination and language, a subject and an object are related and at this point the sensual image of an object goes through the process of a series of active transformation. The poetic image created through this process is characterized by novelty and openness. Thus, it is possible to start from an object and get over the object.
The activeness and openness of poetic images are differentiated from the theories that are looking for poetic images in past experiences. Despite differences in individual experiences, a poetic image can be transferred and expanded to others and sublimated into aesthetic sympathy. This ability, which is based on personal experiences but gets beyond them, is in different dimension from the functions of association and unconsciousness. The association theory adheres an image to a memory by explaining various motions of images through memories, reproduction of past experiences. This theory reduces imagination to fantasy and cannot explain the activeness and inevitability of imagination.
Psychoanalytic criticism, which explains poetic images with unconsciousness, is also fixed with the past. The theory, in which sexual experiences in the infancy form the basis of human memories and they are distorted and suppressed through various transforming operations, explains poetic images as sexual symbols or replacements. In this theory, regression to the past and repetition complex of the subject and the original experiences in the infancy that cannot be repeated are viewed as the basic drive of creating art, an activity of compensation. However, poetic images provide novelty and communication that are above the past and representation of memories. To achieve novelty and communication by materializing the past with language is possible because it is premised with the changes in a subject that renews the past. This suggests that poetic images be connected with the openness to the future that re-forms the past experiences.
Imagination relates a subject with an object and the past with the future through poetic images. Imagination can bless fixed images with dynamic features and integrate those images. It is Bachelard who are fully aware that poetic images reveal a New World and that imagination is what is behind such creation. Imagination is "an ability to transform images and an active exploration of human mind in a new direction and it enables a clear search of objects. Bachelard's understanding clearly shows the activeness, openness, and creativity of imagination and poetic images.
The activeness and openness of poetic images result in the issue of their direction. This is what the Jung's theory that searohes au archetype in a human being as a subject, especially in the sphere of unconsciousness and Frey's theory that searches such an archetype through repetition of the nature's cyclical process are about. Still, these theories are divided from the motions through concrete objects and the theories have the possibility of limiting the individual aspects of poetic images. Accordingly, a theory pursuing the originality to preserve the individuality of poetic images is needed and Bachelard's theories on materials and four elements are the most specified ones. In these theories, there is an original material that has connected purity behind the appearance of an object, and physical imagination is recognized as the power of a subject that moves toward the original image. In this context,'alchemy"'is a term that explains 'physical sublimation "'and 'dynamic dualism', and represents a unique, intermediary function of poetic creativity. As is shown, Bachelard's four elements theory is at the peak of the thinking on imagination and poetic images. Thats because (1) it considers the subject as well as the object of the imagination, (2) it includes the mobility and originality of poetic images, and (3) it illustrates the possibility of poetic creation through this.
A poets use of language is essentially different from the perceptual use of language because it materializes the creativity of language within the general limitation of language. The ways that creativity is manifested in poetic language are various. The most direct way is making a new language. Giving an existing language a different meaning or transforming an existing language is one of the ways of revealing creativity. Numerous textures and nuances of a poetic language are created through these processes. Yet, the most important moment of creation is creating a new meaning through combinations of language. What controls the combinations of language is the mobility and originality of poetic images. Synesthesia, symbols and metaphors show the vertical and horizontal motions of poetic images as poetic tools that achieve that combination. Synesthesia is horizontal convergence of images, while symbols are vertical contrast of images. Metaphors are horizontal integration of images. Synesthesia, symbols, and metaphors can active aesthetic accomplishments because there are instantaneous and exalted integrating motions of images in imaginary areas.
Poetic creation can be understood as creation of new meanings and self-creation of a subject through poetic images. A meaning of on object that did not exist and were not recognized before is created. This creation of a new meaning makes it possible for a subIect to transform psychologically and cognitively. A poet becomes a new subject during the process of creation and a reader, who will resumes the process from the end of creation, also becomes a new subject. Where poetic creativity manifests itself is a poetic image. A poetic image is a result of creation and at the same time it exists in reality. Not only it exists because it was created, but also it exists as a reality as well as a creature. In this context, it is possible not to be confined in dichotomy, being vs. non-being of poetic images, depth vs. surface, subjectivity vs. objectivity, and form vs. substance. In other words, it is 'retentissement' and 'resonance' of poetic images that bridge the gulf in dichotomy. Diffusion and deepening of a being is what poetic images are dreaming of and it can be realized through horizontal and vertical dynamics of poetic images.
