This research is an attempt at comparison between printed media and broadcasting concerning the degree of effectiveness in advertisement of television programs, and an analysis of resulting data. To be more specific, this study seeks to corroborate the level of influence promotion and advertisement, by TV and newspaper, on a given program's viewer ratings, by comparison of the two mediums. The promotion spoken of in this research include TV spots directly publicizing the program and publicity campaigns through articles and advert isements in print, both with the express purpose of raising viewer ratings. The article presents two fundamental is sues that serve as frameworks for analy ses, while the det ail is provided by hypothesis auxiliary to the issues presented.
This present research is based on two months of analysis of programs produced by a terrestrial broadcaster taking into account promotional campaigns in print and on television, special articles devoted to the program, and prior announcements ; involving operational definition of the main variables to testify the effects of each on viewer ratings of a given program.
THESIS 1
The specific modes of utilization of media for promotion of TV programming.
Hypothesis #1
Classification of out standing theories concerning program promotion, and the advantages and shortcomings of the models or theories concerned.
THESIS 2
The effects of promotion by broadcast or printed media upon viewer ratings of TV programming.
Hypothesis #1
The effects of TV or print advertisement upon a given program's viewer ratings.
Hypothesis #2
The effects of variables in TV or print advertisement upon a program's viewer ratings.
Hypothesis #3
The effects of TV or print advertisement upon viewer ratings given dependent variables in a given program.
Hypothesis #4
The effects of critical newspaper articles upon the program's viewer ratings.
The research drew the following conclusions :
First, cases with simult aneous promotion of the program in print and by TV resulted in rise in viewer ratings too inadequate to consider it meaningful in comparison with absence of promotion or advertisement. Second, promotion by newspaper art icles yielded a increase in ratings depending on the size of the article in a few cases, but increases were insignificant, and the frequency of prior announcement of forthcoming programs had no bearing upon viewer ratings. However, the third conclusion the research came to was the fact that there was a difference depending on the type of program, with the ratings for news, dramas, and documentaries responding positively to promotion and advertisement, while the response did not materialize for entertainment and variety shows. Fourth, and surprisingly, it was revealed that programs actually benefitted from printed articles that were critical and negat ive, corroborating the fact that ratings points could actually be gained from the at tention and interest generated by the articles concerned, regardless of their opinions about the program.
This research has demonstrated that viewer rat ings for television programs are impacted most positively when advertised by a combination of prior announcements, regarded as the most important promotional instrument, with TV and print articles (newspaper). Lastly, as a method of promoting programs produced by terrestrial TV broadcasters, newspapers stand out as the superior promotional tool relative to broadcast ing.
