The history of the Korean women's movement after 1980's developed under the strong influence of absorptive and patriarchal ideology structure of the main-stream social movements. There have been numerous debates on the relationship between the social movement and the women's movement, but what was regarded as the 'main-stream' was the women's movement which tried to gain its recognition of its 'progressiveness' through positioning itself within the 'total movement', and it continues into the 1990's as 'women's organization movement'. But from the beginning of the 90's, critical analysis began to emerge focusing on the fact that the social movement which profess itself as 'progressive' is actually very patriarchal, and the 'feminists' after mid 90's, extensively challenging the patriarchy of the main-stream social movements, came to form a new feminist identity.
The focus of this thesis is to bring light on how the formation of these women's feminist identity is related to the age-long patriarchy of social movements. In feminist theory, to have a feminist identity is defined as fundamentally having a new cognition of oneself and of the world But this does not mean that the feminist identity is singular and fixed It is placed within the 'process' that is endlessly negotiated and reconstructed according to particular context and conditions. Leaning on this theory, I viewed that the 'feminists' after mid 90's developed its feminist identity through the challenge against and delinking from the patriarchy of main-stream social movement of Korea With this hypothesis in mind I performed sample analysis centered around in-depth interviews with two groups that were formed after mid 90's - the 'feminists inside universities' and the 'feminists inside social movement organizations'
The criticisms and the challenges put to practice manifested that, from the gender-blind ideology to the male-centered culture and organizing principles of the Korean Marxist social movements, these elements form systematically entwined structural problem The division of roles according to gender, the, male-convenient dual ,morality, gender perspective that degrades women and the authoritarian everyday life etc, are the patriarchal structures that he deep inside the main-stream social movements, and the dichotomy based on meta-discourse that depreciates women's issues has the absorptive tendency to converge them into class conflict. The 'feminists' thought women's oppression as being separate and independent from the so-called 'total movement', tried to overcome the patriarchy of the former 'main-stream social movements' and have experimented with new themes and methods of mobilizing. The criticism against the patriarchy of social movements and the self-recognition of independence of the feminist movement are important indexes in describing the characteristics of the feminist identity that came into being after the mid 90's
But through the efforts to implement and put into practice the 'independence' of the feminist movement, there emerged a tendency to define feminism as an antithesis to the patriarchal social movement, and the isolating situation of being involved in the feminist movement while continually conflicting with the main-stream social movement prevented the proper surfacing of 'difference' within feminist interpretation and culture. Despite the fact that the particular aspects of feminist identity cannot help but differ according to personal historical context, conditions and experiences of social activism, there was an obsession to maintain a singular identity of 'we' instead to manifesting and debating these differences. Through in-depth interviews with 16 people, I was able to see that hierarchal definition method of 'the true feminist' cannot help but give birth to exclusion, and the establishment of homogeneous identity of 'we are one' has the danger of actually de-contextualizing individual experiences and conditions. Instead, feminist solidarity can be sought for through actively manifesting and contextualizing 'difference' and 'conflict'
But despite these differences and conflict, the historical meaning of these feminists that occupy in the history of Korean social movements and women's movement cannot be undervalued. First of all, the fact that the university feminists showed self-identity through the emphasis of 'independence', that they created and practiced a variety of strategies and discourses, and that they extended political experiments even to the territory of everyday life, have historical meaning. In the case of feminists in social movement organizations, they are important because they escaped from individual isolating situations and formed a feminist conscious, and they systemized, collectivized and organized resistance against patriarchy inside social movements. Therefore, one can conclude that the feminists who emerged after mid 90's was the appearance of a new feminist identity, on the basis that they formed their independent feminist identity through the criticisms and struggles against patriarchy of social movements and that they extensively challenged and attained notable achievements by organizing through collective action.
