This paper, comprising 7 chapters, presents a study on teacher talk in Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language(TKFL). 'Teacher talk' means the linguistic and interactive adjustments that teachers make to both language forms and language functions in order to facilitate communication in second language classrooms. There are two main functions of effective teacher talk in these settings. The first permits teachers to organize the classroom process effectively by using the appropriate teacher talk. The second enables teachers to make the learning process more effective through the use of linguistic and interactional modifications in their pedagogy.
The first chapter focuses on the purpose of this study, which is to present an analysis of types of teacher talk based on interactional functions and then to identify the main characteristics of the teacher talk spoken in Korean language classrooms. The second chapter reviews both the theoretical basis used by previous researchers and recent tendencies in studies on teacher talk in ESL.
The third chapter describes the experimental method and procedures employed in this study. 20 intermediate-level Korean language classrooms in 10 different programs in 6 language institutes are video and audio taped in uncontrolled, natural classroom situations. There are 20 male and female Korean teachers having various degrees of teaching experience and of different ages, as well as 165 international students in the recordings. All of the video tapes are transcribed 3 times according to dramaturgical notation.
The fourth chapter contains an analysis and taxonomic classification of types of teacher talk according to the interactional function in the initiation category, which is the first category of the general classroom interaction cycle: the I(initiation)-R(response)-F(feedback) cycle. In the initiation category of classroom interaction, two types of teacher talk are listed: 'elicitation', and 'procedural statement'. 'Elicitation' has sub-types such as display questions, referential questions, practice elicitation, completion elicitation, and topic presentation. 'Procedural statement' contains procedural questions, procedure presentation, and direction as sub-types.
The fifth chapter comprises an analysis and taxonomy of types of teacher talk in the feedback category which are classified as 'evaluation', 'correction', 'strengthening', 'confirmation', 'explanation', 'interactive encouragement', or 'nonverbal response'. Each of these 7 types has its own sub-types based on the latter's unique function in the classroom interaction. 'Evaluation' contains sub-types such as acceptance, praise, signaling disagreement, constructive criticism and expressing attitudes. 'Correction' comprises explicit correction, implicit correction, and complement. 'Strengthening' includes emphasis and input reinforcement. 'Confirmation' deals with clarification requests, comprehension checks, and confirmation checks. 'Explanation' includes structuring, paraphrasing, backtracking, comparisons, extensions, translations, giving examples, presenting visual aids, and body language. 'Interactive encouragement' comprises repartee, ignoring errors, and digression. Finally, 'non-verbal response' includes laughter and silence.
Chapter 6 presents three characteristics of teacher talk in Korean language classrooms based on the results shown in the previous 2 chapters and on the general tendencies of the Korean teachers' pedagogical methods: the first is the fact that explanation in the feedback category, which contains the most variety in its sub-types, occurs more frequently than any other type of teacher talk in Korean language instructors' classroom speech. The second is these teachers' general tendency to ignore the specific functions of each type of teacher talk, especially when they elicit students' responses and consequently use display questions in almost every case regardless of the purpose of the interaction. The third is that the amount of teachers' speech is significantly greater than that of students', and that there are in reality very few opportunities for students to practice target language in Korean language classrooms. All three characteristics discussed in this chapter lead us to conclude that the main problem in Korean language classrooms is the fact that teachers need to learn how to speak more effectively, both to give proper language input to the students and to manage their classrooms efficiently.
In the last chapter a brief summarization of the results of this study is made and some suggestions are offered to overcome the problems identified in this study, such as providing opportunities for teachers to learn teacher talk skills through inservice training.
