The purpose of this study is to examine which events the clients perceive as important and how the clients evaluate the sessions in group counseling based on the Solution-Focused Brief Counseling method.
The research questions were set up as follows;
First, what are the important events in each session from the view of the clients?
Second, how is each session evaluation in the view of the clients?
Third, what changes do the clients experience in each session?
To perform this study, the subjects attended 8 sessions of group counseling based on Solution-Focused brief counseling. The subjects were 7 students who from P university.
The instruments used for this study were Important Events Questionnaire, the Group Counseling Helpful Impacts Scale and Session Evaluation Questionnaire(SEQ).
The conclusions of this study are as follows;
First, in the entire course of the group counseling, the important event which was perceived the most times was Other versus Self focus, and the important event which was perceived to be the most helpful was Problem Definition-Change.
Second, in the entire course of the group counseling, the 6th session was the deepest and the one with the most arousal but it was also the least smooth session. Session 1 was the least deep session but after that session the clients felt the most positive emotion. The smoothest session was session 4 and at the end of session 7 the clients had the most positive emotion and were least aroused.
Third, in the entire course of the group counseling, clients experienced different important events and session evaluations from each other. After the counseling, the clients who reported improvement in their problems were client 1, client 6 and client 7. And the important event which was commonly perceived by these 3 clients was Emotional Awareness-Insight and Problem Definition-Change.
This study will prove to be useful in accessing client´s needs in Solution-Focused Brief Counseling.
