교사 윤리로서 배려의 가치 = (The) Value of Caring as Teacher's Ethics

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 최근 새로이 제기되고 있는 배려 윤리 (Ethics of Care)의 개념과 윤리관을 탐구하여 교사 윤리에 어떤 의의가 있는가를 논하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 우리 사회에서 요구하는 교사 윤리를 탐색하고 Gilligan과 Noddings를 중심으로 배려 윤리의 개념 및 원리를 논의한 후, 배려의 윤리가 주는 시사점을 논의하였다.
교사 윤리는 하나의 직업 윤리로서 교사가 교육적 효과를 극대화시키기 위해 마땅히 지켜야 할 자율적 규범으로 정의된다. 교사 윤리가 갖는 특성은 교직의 특수성에 비추어 교직행동의 비공식적 규범으로서의 특성, 교사의 모든 행위와 관련된 특성, 교육의 질을 결정하는 요소로서의 특성 그리고 실천적 행동 강령으로서의 특성으로 분류된다. 교사 윤리의 내용은 교사 윤리가 담겨있는 공무원윤리헌장, 교원 윤리강령, 사도헌장, 사도강령을 중심으로 배려의 윤리와 관련이 있는 덕목을 찾을 때 교육애(사랑), 성실, 신뢰, 협동, 봉사 등이 추출된다.
배려의 윤리는 Kohlberg중심의 정의의 윤리에서 제시하는 도덕발달체계가 남성편향적인 것으로 여성에게는 맞지 않음을 비판하면서 출발하였다. 배려는 어떤 사물이나 사람에 대해 관심과 애정을 갖는 것이며, 그들에 대해 걱정하거나 염려하는 정신적 상태이다. 배려의 윤리는 상호 호혜적 관계를 기본으로 하고 타인과 '함께 느낌'의 정서를 중시한다. 또한 배려의 윤리에 깔린 논리는 正義 윤리에서 강조되는 공정성과는 다른, 인간 관계에 내포된 인간 심리의 논리이다. 배려의 윤리는 모성적 사고에서 출발하였지만 모든 인간에게 적용 가능한 보편적인 윤리로 확대된 것이며, 관계성을 기본으로 하고 있다. 관계성의 구성 요소는 수용성, 인간관계 그리고 감응성이다. 배려의 윤리는 배려의 주체와 객체가 상호 교감이 있을 때 성립 된다. 이러한 배려 윤리의 의의는 기존의 정의 윤리와 대립하는 양자택일적인 관계가 아니라 기존의 윤리가 갖는 한계점을 극복해주는 상호 보완적인 역할에 있다. 배려의 윤리도 주관에 빠지기 쉽다는 단점 때문에 正義 윤리의 공정성과 같은 객관적 준거를 수용할 때 건강한 윤리로 자리 잡을 수 있다.
교사 - 학생, 교사 - 학부모, 교사 자신 그리고 교직자 상호간의 관계에 배려 윤리가 어떤 의의가 있는지 살펴보았다. 교사 윤리의 중심 요소는 학교에서 교사와 관계를 맺고있는 학생, 학부모, 교직동료와의 관계에서 찾을 수 있다. 오늘의 학교 현장은 교사와 이들의 관계가 소원해지고 무관심을 보여 관계적 위기에 놓여 있다. 그 결과 사제간의 인간 관계가 무너지고 배움의 터전인 교실이 붕괴되어 가는 상황에 이르고 있다. 이러한 교육 위기 상황은 여러 원인이 총체적으로 얽혀 있지만 그 주요 원인은 교사 - 학생 - 학부모간에 서로를 이해하고 관심을 갖는 상호 배려의 결여나 빈곤에서 비롯되었다고 볼 수 있다. 배려 윤리는 신뢰를 바탕으로 인격적 만남을 통한 관계성 회복에 관심을 갖는 윤리이다. 교사가 교육적 효과를 기대하려면 먼저 주위 사람들과 좋은 관계를 형성하는 것이 필요하다. 좋은 관계의 형성은 상호간의 신뢰와 협조를 가능케 하여 오늘의 삭막하고 분열적인 학교 분위기를 따뜻한 정감이 있는 배려의 공동체로 전환시키는 역할을 담당할 수 있을 것이다.
학교 교육의 중심 위치에 있는 교사는 단순한 지적 전달자라는 소극적 개념에서 벗어나 능동적인 배려자로서의 교사가 되어 학습지도 및 생활 지도 등 모든 분야에서 학생, 학부모, 동료직원간에 배려를 주고받을 때 교육적 성과를 기대할 수 있는 것이다. 비록 뛰어난 교사가 아닐지라도 늘 학생들을 위해 고민하고 실천하는 교사, 힘들어하고 아파하는 학생들에게 쉼터가 되어주고 학생들의 목소리에 귀 기울이는 교사가 우리 교육 현실에는 절실히 요구된다. 여기에서 우리는 배려의 윤리가 공감, 연민, 우정의 정서를 중시하여 감정에 치우친 도덕성이라는 면에서 단점도 갖겠지만 正義의 윤리에서 강조하는 공정성의 준거를 수용한다면 학교의 윤리적 환경 조성이나 교사의 윤리에 시사점을 줄 수 있는 것으로 볼 수 있다.

This study is intended to research the concept and view of ethics of care, which is issuing recently, and discuss what significance to teachers' ethics. For this research, teachers' ethics are surveyed, and the concept and principle of ethic of care is discussed, and then the current issue from the ethics are also discussed from the viewpoint of Gilligan and Noddings.
The ethics of teachers, an ethics of job, is defined as a self-regarding rule which should be kept to get the effect of teaching. The characteristics of the ethics of teachers are divided into the ones: the formal rule of teaching act according to the specialty of teaching, the related to all of teachers' acts, the factors to determine the quality of teaching, and the principles of practical behavior. When we see the virtues related to the ethics of care with the point of The Civil Servant's Charter of Ethics, The Teacher's Principle of Ethics, The Teachers' Charter, and The Teachers' Principle, we can find affection, sincerity, trust, cooperation, service, and so on.
The ethics of care began criticizing that the system of moral development, which is issued from the ethics of justice with the point of Kohlberg, is a male inclination, but it is not suitable for women. To care is having a concern and affection for something or someone, and this is a mental state of fear and solicitude about them. This ethics is basic on the relation of mutual reciprocity, and is accounted much of sentiment 'feel with'. In addition the logical basis of an ethics of caring is that of human minds included by human relationship differs from that of fairness emphasized by an ethics of justice, but on the human minds the human relationship involves. This ethics began from maternal thinking, but it has broadened its aspects to universal ethics applicable to all human beings, and is basic on the relatedness. The relatedness is consisted of receptivity, human relationships and responsiveness. The ethics of care happens when the care of the subject and the object feels mutually. The importance about it is not on the alternative relations against the established ethics of justice, but on the role of the mutual reciprocity to overcome the limits of established ethics. Despite it's somewhat defects of subjectivity easily, it can be a whole ethics in accepting the objective standard like fairness from the ethic of justice.
This study has been examined what significance there is in the ethics of care to the relation, teacher-student, teacher-parents and teacher-teacher. The key point of the teacher's ethics can be found in the relation of students, parents, and colleagues in school. Today this relation between teacher and the others is in danger because of indifference and estrangement. Consequently the human relatedness between teachers and students involving a classroom as a learning place is being broken down. this critical situation of education has origin in lots of factors, but the important problem is resulted from the lack or poverty of mutual benefit from understanding among teachers, students, and parents. the ethics of care is basic on trust, and it is interested in recovering the relationships through the personal meeting. It is necessary for a teacher to create a good relation with people around him first if he hopes to get a educational effect. The mutual trust and cooperation is resulted in a good relations, which can play the role of turning today's dreary and breakup school into the caring community.
A teacher in the middle of school education should rid himself or herself of the passive concept, be a active one, and then he or she can expect educational accomplishments from teaching or guiding students in exchanging cares among students, parents, and colleagues, We need a teacher always tries to think over somethings for students, have a peaceful mind for them, and listen to their sufferings, even if he or she is not an excellent one. We can understand that the ethics of care has the weak point owing to lean toward sympathy, compassion and friendship, and can be an emotion one, but in case of accepting the standard of fairness, it is able to give the importance on creating the ethical school environment or teachers' ethics.
