The purpose of this study were to analyze the processes and effects of children’s computer activites in terms of peer existence or nonexistence, and to suggest the implications for the kindergarten teachers to guide the analysis, the following question were proposed:
Ⅰ. Are there any differences in the processes of children’s computer activities between peer existence and peer nonexistence group?
1. Is there any difference in computer-interaction time between the two groups?
2. Is there any difference in the demand on teacher’s help or teacher’s recognition between the two groups?
3. What is the patterns in drawing the picture using a computer graphics program between the two groups?
1) Is there any difference in drawing the picture using a computer graphics program between the two groups?
2) Do the peer activity patterns appear in subsequent individual computer drawing?
Ⅱ. Are there any differences in the attitudes toward computer activities and the responses after computer activities between peer existence and peer nonexistence group?
Ⅲ. Are there any differences in the computer operation skill and the tool usage skill between peer existence and peer nonexistence group?
Ⅳ. What is the pattern of peer interaction in peer existence group?
1. What is the characteristics of peer interacting having influence on the computer skill learning?
2. Is there any difference in expert’s utterances according to the counter peer’s level of expertise among peer existence group children?
The subjects in this study were fifty-eight, five-year-old kindergartners (33 boys and 25 girls). Twenty-nine children were included in peer existence group and peer nonexistence group, respectively. The computer sofeware used in this study was Kid Pix 2 produced by Broderbund Co., Data collection proceeded through four phases: pre-test which was to identify children’s attitudes toward computer activity and childrens computer operation skill before the activity sessions, 10 activity sessions which took 5 weeks, post-test which was to identify children’s attitudes toward computer activity, children’s computer operation skill, and children’s tool usage skill, and subsequent observation which was to investigate individual child’s drawing using Kid Pix 2. In pre-test and post-test, the data related to the computer activities were collected by the instrument constructed by the investigator based on the related studies. During the activity sessions, the data related to the process of computer activities were collected by observation log and the picture products were collected. Especially in the case of peer existence group, verbal interactions were recorded during the activity sessions. The data were analyzed in various statistics : ANCOVA, independent t-test, Welch-Aspin test, frequencies, and percentiles. In cases of verbal interactions, the content analysis was done for the qualitative data.
The study results are as follows:
Ⅰ. In the processes of computer activities,
1. computer interaction time of peer existence group was longer than that of peer nonexistence group.
2. there were differences in the demands on teacher’s recognition, but no differences in the demands on teacher’s help between peer existence group and peer nonexistence group.
3. there were differences in drawing the picture using a computer graphics program between the two groups in several aspects such as selecting of tool, and use of computer screen, and the peer activity patterns appeared in subsequent individual computer drawing.
Ⅱ. There were no differences in attitudes toward computer activities, but there were differences in the responses after computer activities between peer existence group and peer nonexistence group.
Ⅲ. Both computer operating skill and tool usage skill of peer existence group were superior to those of peer nonexistence group.
Ⅳ. In the patterns of peer interaction,
1. the characteristics of peer interacting having influences on the computer operation skill learning was related to verbal interacting content and counter peer’s guidance.
2. there were differences in expert’s utterances according to the counter peer’s level of expertise.
The implication of this study are that peer existence during computer activities is more beneficial for the kindergartners than peer nonexistence, and the peer interactions are the dynamic processes that should be monitored by the teacher constantly.
