The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the developmental level of ego-identity and the level of religious propensity in terms of the level of schooling, sex and religion. The subject of this study includes 648 students (310 maels, 338 females) rendomly sampled from senior high school and universities located in Pusan, Korea.
The tools used in this study are Dignan's Ego-Identity Scale revised by Bong Yun Seo and Brown's Religiosity Scale revised by thesis author.
The following conclusions were obtained from this study.
1. The ego-identity developmental level of university students is, in general, higher than that of high school, students.
Higher level of the ego-identity development is shown for university students than high school students especially in such subfactors as goal-directedness, self-acceptance and self-assertiveness.
There is no significant difference between male and female students. However, males' ego-identity level in uniqueness and self-assertiveness is higher than that of females.
Having a religion or not does not make any difference in the developmental level.
But higher degree of the development level in the goal-directedness subfactor is shown for students having religion compared with students who dose not have a religion.
2. There is no difference between high school and university students in the level of religious propensity.
Significant difference is revealed in sex, so females are higher than males in the level of religious propensity.
Students who believe in a religion show higher level of religious propensity than those who don't believe it.
3. A significant correlation is revealed not only between ego-identity developmental level of goal-directedness, interpersonal role expectation and religious propensity but also between individualism in religious propensity and self-accpetance in the ego-identity developmental level.
