This thesis aims to investigate the construction of the auxiliary verb poda - syntactically, semantically and pragmatically. The auxiliary verb poda appears in various forms and has several different meanings. Auxiliary verbs in Korean cannot be independent predicates but function as a meaning supporter, located after the main verb in a sentence. The morphemes shipda, chida, daeda are original auxiliary verbs whereas auxiliary verbs poda, po˘rida, tuda, and chuda are transformed from the main verbs.
In this thesis, I will classify poda construction based on its meaning difference and examine its grammatical characteristics. The poda construction can be divided into two types based on its primary meaning; one combined with a connective ending and the other combined with a conclusive ending.
