This study was conducted to analyse the correlation between social support and quality of life in the hearing impaired individuals who were aged more than 20.
The subjects for this study were 100 individuals who had been treated due to hearing impairment at one university hospital and one general hospital in Kwangju city.
The data were collected by using a questionnaire from August 16 to September 7, 1996.
The instrument used in this study were the social support scale developed by- Norbeck and the quality of life scale developed by Rho, You-ja.
The Collected data were analyzed by t test, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient, ANOVA and Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis.
The results of this study were as follows:
1. There were no significant differences between the social support scores and demographic characteristics.
2. There were no significant differences between the social support scores and characteristics related hearing impairment.
3. The results of the analyzing of the relationship between the quality of life scores and demographic characteristics of subjects as follows : there were statistically significant differences in age(F = 9.36, P < 0.001), marital status(t = 5.5519, P < 0.001), educational level(F = 3.41, P < 0.051, occupation(F=4.01, P < 0.001), monthly income(F = 356. P < 0.01).
4. The first hypothesis, "there would be relationship between the degree of hearing impairment and the level of quality of life" was not supported
5. The second hypothesis, "the higher the level of social support in hearing impaired patients, the higher the level of quality of life will be" was supported. (r= 0.24, P < 0.05)
6. The main factors influencing on the quality of life were marital status(23.93%), educational level(13.86%), occupation(3.85%) and possession of house (2.65%).
