The purpose of this study is to verify the impacts of transactional analysis therapy(TA) on personality functions of the juvenile delinquent, which is a psychotherapy model developed by E. Berne, and to pursue the ways of utilizing it as a treatment program. 15 inmates from the Taegu Juvenile Parole House were chosen as a treatment group (TG) with an 8-week the TA program and their pre- and post-egograms were compared to estimate changes on personality functions.
Findings were as follows:
1. Of the personality functions of the TG. Critical Parent ego state(CP) Nurturing Parent ego state(NP). Free Child ego stste(FC). and Adapted Child ego state(AC) showed significant changes, whereas Adult ego state(A) showed some functional improvement with no statistical significance.
Therefore TA has been proved as having some impacts on changing CP. NP. FC. AC of the TG's personality functions. The ego gram with five personality functions largely showed changed balance compared to the states before the treatment.
2. The therapy adopted in this study can be utilized both in therapeutic and preventive way. First. therapeutic effects can be obtained by educating the correctional officials and the laypersons with professional knowledge and skills. Education of the correctional officials is urgent because there are few effective therapist among them for the inmates of the Juvenile Parole House which provides short term care in pinciple and where most of the inmates are exposed to crimes for the first time. Thus it is desirable to open the facility for the laypersons with professional knowledge and skills to provide therapy to the inmates. In combination with TA therapy. group therapy and/or family therapy are also recommendable to promote therapeutic results and to prevent future crimes. Second. preventive effects can be obtained through employing school social workers in the long run and collaborations of family. school and community based on community human services centers for the moment. However since school social work policy has not yet been adopted. schools are advised to refer students and their families' problems to the community human services centers.
