This study is to analyze some learning problems derived from the idiomatic differences of idioms and proverbs of the two countries.
For this research, I have adminstered an experimental test with a questionaire of 25 items consisting of cultural aspects and English proverbs that are supposed to cause many difficulties in learning English.
From the obtained data, I have found several problems that Korean students have in understanding idiomatic expressions and using spoken English.
First, students have been learning English through reading skills. Second, they tend to translate a Korean sentence into English based on the Korean concept of the sentence. Third, they are using English idioms without any cultural background knowledge. Fourth, they don't have the ability to use spoken English in an appropriate situation. Fifth, they have been taught in context inefficiently without having any funs.
Considering all those problems, I would like to make some suggestions for more creative teaching of English idiomatic expressions.
First, We should teach them many things about the target culture. Second, We should teach them communicative skills with reading skills. Third, We should make them distinguish written style from spoken English through many practical patterns in a different context. Fourth, We should make them pay attention to the origin of any idiomatic expressions. Fifth, We should make them use any of media about English.
