This thesis theorizes the concept of the Infoborg as a new ontological subject emergent in the era of digital transformation, critically examining how information and algorithms reconfigure human identity. The Infoborg is not merely a human-machine hybrid but a subject operating within a recursive loop of extraction, computation, and self-referencing, wherein emotions, memories, and bodies are transmuted into data and reorganized through algorithmic operations. Drawing from and critically integrating posthumanist discourse (Donna Haraway, N. Katherine Hayles), biomedia theory (Eugene Thacker), cybernetics (Norbert Wiener), and the technological ontology of Yuk Hui, this study proposes a fundamental ontological shift in which information itself—rather than the biological body—becomes the generative principle of subjectivity. While existing theories have focused on the relation between biological embodiment and information, the Infoborg framework radicalizes this relation by positing a data-centric condition of being. This information-based ontology is not merely theoretical, but aesthetically enacted through contemporary media art. Weidi Zhang and Rodger Luo’s reCollection explores the informatic abstraction of memory and immaterial subjectivity; Pierre Huyghe’s UUmwelt visualizes recursive neural data loops; Ian Cheng’s BOB stages algorithmic self-design; LuYang’s DOKU series performs digital identity through repetition and simulation; and Refik Anadol’s Machine Hallucinations renders the sensory materialization of data. These artworks collectively demonstrate that the Infoborg is not a speculative fiction, but a sensorial and aesthetic reality already in formation. The emergence of the Infoborg is a necessary outcome of digital capitalism. In the system Shoshana Zuboff terms “surveillance capitalism,” all human activity is extracted as data and reconstituted as callable informational objects. Yet the Infoborg is not a passive recipient of this logic—it operates as a political subject capable of resistance through its recursive structure and self-generating logic. This marks an extension of biopolitical paradigms into what may now be understood as informational biopolitics. Ultimately, this thesis offers a critical framework to rethink human subjectivity under conditions in which digital technologies function not as external tools, but as ontological infrastructures. It analyzes how human beings are called, computed, and composed through informational loops, and how the possibility of resistance and re-subjectivation might emerge within this recursive system. The Infoborg provides both a theoretical and practical ground for imagining new forms of data-driven subjectivity and immaterial existence within the entangled regimes of technology, information, and capital.
