작가와 생성형 인공지능의 협업을 통한 캐릭터 일러스트레이션 연구: '파리스의 심판'의 재해석

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 그리스 로마 신화의 주요 서사인 ‘파리스의 심판’의 스토리와 캐릭터를 현대적 시각으로 재해석하고, 이를 바탕으로 생성형 인공지능(AI)을 활용한 캐릭터 일러스트레이션 작업의 가능성과 한계를 탐구한다. 작가가 직접 생산한 동양화, 포토샵 일러스트레이션을 레퍼런스로 삼아 그림 스타일과 화풍을 AI가 학습하여 추후 작가의 창작 세계를 다양하게 발전시키고자 한다. 최근 생성형 AI와 미술 분야의 융합 기술이 발전함에 따라 이를 활용한 작품 세계의 확장을 추구하고자 하며 이 연구에서 그 가능성과 방법론을 탐구하고자 한다.
동양화와 포토샵 일러스트레이션을 레퍼런스로 삼아 이미지 생성 AI 플랫폼인 미드저니(Mid Journey), 스테이블 디퓨전(Stable Diffusion) 등을 활용하여 그리스 로마 신화의 에피소드인 ‘파리스의 심판’을 현대적으로 해석했다. 아프로디테, 헤라, 아테네, 파리스 등 주요 캐릭터와 테티스, 에리스 등의 조연을 포함한 신화적 인물들의 이미지를 현대적으로 재창조하였다. 또한, AI의 이미지 생성 과정을 체계적으로 분석하기 위해 프롬프트 설계와 반복적인 테스트를 통해 작업 프로세스를 정리하고, 이를 기록한 프롬프트 북을 제작하였다.
이 연구를 통해 작가는 AI를 활용한 창작 과정에서 작가가 창작한 기존의 예술 작업을 인공지능의 레퍼런스로 삼아서 현대적 캐릭터로 재창조하는 방법을 시도했으며, 창작자가 원하는 스타일과 메시지를 효과적으로 구현하기 위한 AI 프롬프트를 설계했다. 작품 제작 결과, 프롬프트를 단순 영어 문장처럼 적는 방식은 좋은 결과가 나오기 어려웠고 단순한 형태의 수식어와 목적 명사를 먼저 쓰고 이를 자세하게 설명하는 형태의 프롬프트를 키워드 중심으로 나열하는 프롬프트가 효과적이었다. 또한, 사람 대 사람과의 대화에서 반복적이거나 중의적인 표현을 지양하는 게 서로 간의 소통에 좋듯이 레퍼런스 이미지를 바탕으로 조금씩 프롬프트를 바꿔가면서 원하는 이미지 제작을 하는 방법은 작가가 생성형 AI와도 원활한 커뮤니케이션을 위한 한 방법으로서 작품에 적용하기 좋았고, 프롬프트를 한번 입력했을 때 이미지 제작 결과가 좋지 않았으면, 같은 프롬프트를 계속해서 시도해도 좋은 결과물로 이어지지 않았다. 결국, 프롬프트를 세밀하게 조정하고 여러 레퍼런스 이미지들을 바꿔가면서 작가의 의도에 맞는 이미지와의 접점을 찾는 것이 중요한데, 반복적으로 작업을 생산하다 보면 작가가 미처 생각지 못한 창의적인 결과물이 생성되는 예도 있었다.
연구 결과, 생성형 인공지능은 신화적 서사를 현대적으로 재구성하는 데 있어 창작자의 의도와 상상력을 시각적으로 구현하는 강력한 도구가 될 수 있음을 보여주었으나, AI의 한계때문에 생성형 AI Tool에서 제공하는 기능인 Vary Region, Upscale creative, Vary(Subtle) 등을 활용하여 세부적인 수정 및 보완 작업이 필요함도 확인하였다. 이 연구는 시각디자인 분야에서 생성형 인공지능의 활용 가능성을 확장하고, 창작 과정을 효율화하는 데 있어 작가가 더 실험적이면서도 기술 경향에 들어맞는 방법을 시도하기 위한 관문으로서 본인의 작품 세계를 확장하는 데에 이바지할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study reinterprets the story and characters of “The Judgment of Paris,” the main narrative of Greek and Roman mythology, from a modern perspective and explores the possibilities and limitations of character illustration using generative artificial intelligence (AI) based on this. The artist's own oriental paintings and Photoshop illustrations will be used as references, and the AI will learn the style and painting style to further develop the artist's creative world. With the recent development of generative AI and convergence technology in the field of art, I want to explore the possibilities and methodologies of this research to expand the world of artworks using this technology.
Using oriental painting and Photoshop illustrations as references, the artist created a modern interpretation of the episode “The Judgment of Paris” from Greek and Roman mythology using image generation AI platforms such as Mid Journey and Stable Diffusion. The images of mythical characters, including the main characters such as Aphrodite, Hera, Athens, and Paris, and supporting characters such as Thetis and Eris, were recreated in a modern style. In addition, to systematically analyze the image generation process of AI, the work process was organized through prompt design and repetitive testing, and a prompt book was created to record the process.
Through this research, the artist attempted to recreate existing works of art created by the artist as references for AI in the creative process using AI, and designed AI prompts to effectively implement the style and message desired by the creator. As a result of the work, it was difficult to get good results by writing prompts in the form of simple English sentences, and it was effective to write prompts that listed keywords in the form of simple modifiers and object nouns first and then explained them in detail. Also, just as avoiding repetitive or ambiguous expressions in conversations with people is good for communication, the method of creating the desired image by changing the prompt slightly based on the reference image was a good way to apply it to the work as a way to communicate smoothly with the generative AI, and if the image creation result was not good after entering the prompt once, trying the same prompt repeatedly did not lead to good results. Ultimately, it is important to fine-tune the prompt and change various reference images to find the image that matches the artist's intention, and there were cases where the artist produced creative results that they had not yet thought of when they repeatedly produced work.
The research results showed that generative AI can be a powerful tool for visually embodying the creator's intention and imagination in modern reinterpretations of mythical narratives, but it also confirmed that detailed modifications and additions are required using the functions provided by the generative AI tool, such as Vary Region, Upscale creative, and Vary (Subtle), due to the limitations of AI. This study can expand the possibilities of using generative artificial intelligence in the field of visual design and contribute to expanding the artist's world of work as a gateway to experiment with more experimental and technology-oriented methods to streamline the creative process.
