국문 초록 (Abstract)

뷔욕은 아이슬란드의 자연과 신화에서 비롯된 영감을 토대로 실험적인 접근 방식의 음악 표현과 독특한 목소리와 보컬 표현으로 세계적인 인정을 받았다. 또한 그녀는 현대음악사에서 팝과 아방가르드 음악의 경계를 허무는 혁신적인 아티스트로서도 인정받고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 아이슬란드 출신의 아티스트 뷔욕의 보컬 표현기법과 예술적 접근 방식을 탐구하고 전위적인 보컬 표현기법과 예술적 접근 방식을 분석하였다.

첫째, 뷔욕의 넓은 예술 활동 중 실험적인 보컬 표현기법에 주목한다. 예시 곡에서 그녀가 확장된 보컬 기법(Extended Vocal Techniques (EVT))과 학술적으로 정형화된 보컬 표현기법들을 어떻게 활용하여 전위적 음악의 맥락에서 실험적 성격의 보컬 표현기법 역할을 이루고 있는지를 연구한다.

둘째, 뷔욕의 보컬 표현기법이 상업 음악과 실험 예술 사이의 생산적인 대화를 어떻게 창출하는지 탐구한다. 이를 통해 그녀의 실험적 보컬 표현기법이 대중음악과 실험 음악의 경계를 어떻게 허무는 역할에 기여하고 있는지 분석한다.

셋째, 이론적 배경에서는 아방가르드 음악의 선구자인 순수 아방가르드 아티스트 존 케이지(John Cage)와 메레디스 몽크(Meredith Monk)의 예술적 행보와 특성을 살펴본다. 이후 연구내용에서 뷔욕의 예시 곡들을 분석한 결과를 토대로 결론에서는 뷔욕과 존 케이지, 메레디스 몽크를 비교하여 유사점과 차별점을 도출한다.
그를 통해 뷔욕이 그들과 어떠한 유사점으로써 아방가르드 전통을 계승하였고 어떠한 차별점으로써 그녀만의 방식으로 대중음악과 아방가르드 음악 사이에서 다리를 놓는 역할을 이루며 아방가르드 음악의 현대적 해석을 제시하고 있는지에 대한 결론을 짓는다.

결론적으로, 뷔욕의 실험적 보컬 표현기법과 예술적 접근 방식 탐구를 통해 그녀의 예술적 정체성과 독창성을 깊이 이해하고자 하며 이를 통해 특정한 감각의 표현을 단정 짓기 어려운 한계가 있는 음악, 예술학계에 ‘실험적’이라는 맥락의 보컬 표현기법에 대한 이해 제공과 향후 다양한 아방가르드 실험적 보컬 및 음악 표현의 예시로써의 새로운 영감을 줄 수 있는 연구가 되기를 기대한다.

This study aims to explore the vocal expression techniques and artistic approaches of the Icelandic artist Björk. Drawing inspiration from Iceland's nature and mythology, Björk has gained global recognition for her experimental musical expressions and unique vocal techniques. As an innovative artist who blurs the boundaries between pop and avant-garde music in contemporary music history, this study analyzes her avant-garde vocal expression techniques and artistic approaches.

First, the study focuses on Björk's experimental vocal techniques within her various artistic activities. It investigates how she employs Extended Vocal Techniques (EVT) and academically standardized vocal expression methods in the context of avant-garde music to achieve experimental vocal expression.

Second, it explores how Björk's vocal techniques foster a productive dialogue between commercial music and experimental art. This analysis aims to understand how her experimental vocal techniques contribute to dissolving the boundaries between popular and experimental music.

Third, the theoretical background examines the artistic journeys and characteristics of John Cage and Meredith Monk, pioneers of avant-garde music. Based on the analysis of Björk's example songs, the conclusion compares and contrasts Björk with John Cage and Meredith Monk, identifying similarities and differences.

Through this comparison, the study examines how Björk inherits the avant-garde tradition through her similarities with these artists and how she uniquely bridges popular and avant-garde music, presenting a modern interpretation of avant-garde music.

In conclusion, by exploring Björk's experimental vocal techniques and artistic approaches, this study seeks to deeply understand her artistic identity and originality. It aims to provide insights into the 'experimental' context of vocal expression techniques in music and art, which are often challenging to define. This research aspires to offer new inspiration for various avant-garde experimental vocal and musical expressions in the future.
