This study is about development and application of ESD program based on SDG 15 in connection with 2015 revised integrated curriculum for first-year elementary school students. After that, I looked at how ESD program changes students' perceptions and behaviors of conserving the land ecosystem and looked at the meaning and effect of the SDG program based on the SDG 15.
From the perspective of sustainable development education as lifelong education, it can be said that ESD for low-grade elementary school students is essential. The integrated curriculum has many similarities to the approach pursued by ESD. Therefore, ESD program was developed using the integrated curriculum. Accordingly, this study analyzed the 2015 revised integrated curriculum and looked for contents related to SDGs within the curriculum. Based on the derived results, a program for first graders in elementary school was developed by extracting parts related to SDG 15 in the integrated curriculum. The developed program was applied to 13 classes for one class students in the first grade of public S elementary school located in Gyeonggi-do.
Among the integrated curriculum, the main theme of the <Spring> textbook was selected and the class was organized. 13 classes were divided into 3 classes, and each class focuses on system thinking, emotion, ethics, and value competency. Considering the characteristics of the lower grades of elementary school, the effect of the class was maximized through experiences and topics related to daily life. After each program, the class was reflected and the next class guidance plan was supplemented. After class, the results were analyzed by conducting a pre-post study paper to confirm changes in students' perceptions and behaviors about conservation of the land ecosystem. In addition, qualitative data were collected and analyzed through methods such as learning outcomes, in-depth interviews, and observations.
The conclusions obtained from this study are as follows. First, the ESD Program for the First grade of elementary school based on SDG 15 expanded students' awareness of the land ecosystem. Second, the ESD Program in the First grade of elementary school based on SDG 15 changed students' behavior to preserve the land ecosystem in a positive direction. Third, teachers were able to grow as researchers in ESD and improved their ability to teach lower grades. Fourth, it was confirmed that the integrated curriculum of elementary school could be an efficient approach to conducting sustainable development education.
The sustainable development education program for the First grade of elementary school developed in this study will be used in conjunction with integrated subjects at school sites to arouse learners' interest in preserving the land ecosystem and contribute to fostering three major capabilities of ESD.
