In this study, unit key words from the middle school science curriculum were extracted to develop a system that guides the book catalog related to the unit key words of subject. And the purpose of this study is to verify the usability of the system and to suggest improvement plans that can contribute to the academic achievement and subject knowledge expansion of student users by implementing the book catalog system related to the key words.
The subject of this study is middle school science, where self-directed inquiry learning is possible through books related to subject knowledge and the connection between subject topics can be examined.
The research method is as follows. By analyzing the 2015 revised curriculum and all textbooks of the middle school science department, unit key words were selected, and the relevance of the key wordss to school grades was analyzed. Based on the analyzed data, a list of books related to the topic of the unit was prepared, and a subject index was created using the unit key words of the unit as an index word. And design a curriculum school grade linkage system that guides the school grade linkage related to the unit topic. In order to implement this system as a web page that users can use directly, the Notion system was used to develop the first unit of the first grade of middle school science as a sample. And a total of 251 first grade students from two schools in Incheon were subjected to system experiments and satisfaction evaluations.
The research contents and procedures were conducted in the order of subject data analysis, system design, system implementation, and satisfaction evaluation.
First, in the unit analysis for system design, curriculum that suggested the basic direction of education at the national level and textbooks containing learning contents and learning activities based on the curriculum were analyzed in order to select the subject unit key words for the middle school science. Key words were extracted by analyzing a total of 14 textbooks for all grades of middle school science. As a result, a total of 179 key words were selected by deriving 164 key words from the curriculum and 15 additional key words from textbooks among 24 unit. As a result of school grade linkage analysis investigating the relationship between unit key words and curriculum, the number of units linked to middle school science was 21 and 87 key words, and the number of units linked to other grade was 121.
Second, three functions of the unit catalog system were designed through data analysis. A total of 358 subject unit book catalog were designed by connecting 179 unit key words and 2 related books. Also an index system that links the catalog of books related to the unit key words as an index word and a school unit link system that connects other school grade unit related to the unit key words were designed.
Third, in order to implement a web page system that users can usable, an unit catalog system using the work sharing system Notion was implemented using the first unit of the middle school 1st grade science as a sample. The unit catalog system has the ability to select subjects, grades, textbook publishers, and link unit topic to a book catalog page. The index system is configured to move to the book catalog page by composing the subject word of the unit as an index word. The subject grade linkage system is a function to check the relationship between the key words of subject unit and other grade subject units linked to the subject key words.
Fourth, to directly experience the unit catalog system and evaluate satisfaction, two middle schools in Incheon were selected and a total of 251 1st grade students were subjected to an experiment and a satisfaction survey. The survey response was based on the Likert 5-point scale, and the average of 10 system satisfaction questions on the 5-point scale was 4.27-point, a very positive result.
On the other hand, the unit catalog system needs to be developed and operated in conjunction with the DLS used by most school libraries for efficient system operation. Although this study was limited to the science of middle school, it needs to be expanded and applied to all subjects. In addition, the Notion used as a sample system in this study has limitations in search and screen composition, so it is thought that the development of a specialized data catalog system is necessary to effectively build and operate the functions of the unit catalog system.
