This paper presents the design and analysis of orbit maneuver scenarios for VISION cube satellite formation flying mission, which is consisted of two cube-satellites at low earth orbit of 600 km altitude. VISION mission aims to regulate the inter-satellite distance from minimum 50 km to maximum 1,000 km, while conducting free space optical communication between two satellites. Both satellites have its own propulsion system based on cold gas propellent. VISION mission’s orbit maneuver scenario is comprised of Launch & Early Orbit Phase, Drift Recovery, Station Keeping, Re-Configuration phases in order. After that, station keeping phase and re-configuration phase is repeated to regulate the inter-satellite distance diversely. In this study, orbit maneuver algorithm is based on drift rate modulation. And we conducted formation flying orbit maneuver simulation with MATLAB and GMAT software, considering the properties of the satellites and the orbit conditions of VISION mission.
In this study, we suppose that the inter-satellite distance is increased to more than 7,000 km after ejection, and demanding orbit control error exists. For the orbit scenarios that the inter-satellite distance follows 50 ~ 1,000 km and 1,000 km ~ 50 km two times, the delta-V budget was calculated for the whole period of VISION mission. And we could also get the delta-V consumption data by orbit maneuver phases. We could calculate that each satellite’s propulsion system consumes 5.13 m/s delta-V budget, considering 1.5 safety factor. Even under harsh orbit control error settings, delta-V consumption result shows 18.2 % margin rate regarding the satellite’s propulsion system’s 6.6 m/s delta-V budget. And we also verify the relative distance error at station keeping phase is satisfied for orbit maneuver requirement.
In this study, we have embodied the actual on-orbit operation situation into VISION orbit maneuver simulation. Regarding the air drag and solar radiation pressure, we have calculated the corresponding effective areas of the satellites to put them into the simulation. And these effective areas are derived with respect to the VISION mission’s orbit maneuver and attitude control scenarios. For effective orbit maneuver performance, we have designed an algorithm to switch the thrusts between satellites to even the amount of propellent between them. We have also devised orbit maneuver strategies for drift recovery and the first station keeping phase, and orbit maneuver strategies for station keeping with five thrusts for 10 days with 2 days interval. And we verified that station keeping with five thrusts is better than previous 1 thrust SK with respect to the relative distance error. We calculated and analyzed the point-ahead angles and their statistics for station keeping phases as it needs to be checked for the attitude control scenarios of VISION mission. The average point-ahead angle values for each inter-satellite distances at station keeping phases were shown to be under 10 μrad.
In this study, we perform analysis with Lambert’s problem, supposing two impulses, on calculating the optimal transfer orbit of drift recovery, which takes about 30 days for VISION mission. Considering that the deputy satellite rotates around the Earth about 430 times on the transfer orbit, we apply ‘multiple revolution Lambert’s problem’(MRLP) analysis on VISION mission’s drift recovery situation. Recent paper on MRLP provides open-source MATLAB code algorithms to take hundreds of revolutions (ultra-revolution problem) into account. With this algorithm, we verified that the optimal transfer orbit solution of MRLP algorithm is almost the same with the transfer orbit of VISION simulation’s drift recovery, which is based on drift rate modulation. So, for now the drift rate modulation for VISION drift recovery is effective enough, with respect to the recent study on ultra-revolution case of MRLP.
