This study aimed to development growth mindset fostering program for Elementary School students in upper grade by ADDIE model and test the effects of the developed program on students’ mindset, academic self-efficacy and grit by quantitative and qualitative research. To achieve this purpose, the following research questions were established.
Research Question 1. What is the effect of the growth mindset promotion program on the mindset of upper elementary school students?
Research Question 2. What is the effect of the growth mindset promotion program on the academic self-efficacy of upper elementary school students?
Research Question 3. What is the effect of the growth mindset promotion program on the grit of upper elementary school students?
This program was conducted on 6th grade students who were in the upper grades of D Elementary School in Gyeonggi-Do. 18 students in the intervention group had 10 lessons in total for 5 weeks and one class time was 40 minutes. 18 students in the comparison group had lessons such as reading education, safety education and disability awareness education.
In order to examine the quantitative effects of the program, both groups performed a pre-test consisting of self-report questionnaire before the program launch one week. One week after the end of the program, both groups performed a post-test consisting of the same questions as the pre-test. In order to examine the qualitative effects of the program, intervention group write the review about the program of good things, bad things and hopes in the last lessons. And when comparing pre-test and post-test, 3 students with the highest change in growth mindset and 2 students with the lowest participated in one-on-one interviews after the end of the program two weeks.
For analysis of the quantitative data, research performed independent sample t-test and one-way analysis of variance(ANCOVA). On the quantitative results, the experiment group not showed a statistically significant difference from the comparison group in the pre- and post-test results of mindset, academic self-efficacy, and grit. Reasons for not showing a significant difference may be the insufficient number of samples and the difficulty of inducing changes in a short period of time due to the characteristics of the dependent variables.
And for analysis of the qualitative data, research performed open type of coding through the TAGETTE program. On the qualitative results, the experiment group showed the responses such as ‘I thought that if I worked hard, my abilities would increase.’, ‘I got the mindset that I can do it.’, ‘I am not easily discouraged when difficulties arise while solving problems.’ after participating in this program. Through these qualitative research results, It can be confirmed that the students participating in the program generally showed positive changes in their mindset, academic self-efficacy, and grit due to the growth mindset promotion program.
The significance of this study is that it developed a program that can induce positive changes in the mindset of upper elementary school students. So if the limitations of quantitative research methods are supplemented in future studies, It will be possible to further increase the effectiveness of the mindset, academic self-efficacy, and grit variables of students who participated in the growth mindset promotion program.
