This study designed a Korean traditional music appreciation guidance plan with a purpose of leading high school students to evaluate and interpret the values that music has and to develop musical sensibility and a broad understanding of music through appreciation of Korean traditional music by conducting a comparative analysis of the newly published textbook 「Music Appreciation and Criticism」 by five publishers respectively according to 2015 revised curriculum, considering them, and selecting the musical concept of Jeongga, which is one of the Korean traditional musical pieces.
Music is the basic form of arts which human beings feel and express emotions and thoughts through by sound, influencing a lot on their lives.
Every art form begins with "appreciation." The basis of music education starts from appreciation, and appreciation learning becomes an important factor in music education.
2015 revised music and curriculum perceived this importance of appreciation, publishing 「Music Appreciation and Criticism」 as a new subject.
This study intends to select Jeongga, a musical piece of great artistic value, for the appreciation class where students can develop their musical sensibility.
Jeongga means the elegant and right song, which is classified into sijo, gagok, and gasa, and the aesthetic as elegant and right music and the sincerity as sincere music interact with each other within this.
In addition, students nowadays exposed to fast and sensational factors need to practice how to feel gentle resonance and bland emotions. The slow and gentle pace of Jeongga could have a positive influence on personality and emotional development of teenagers whose ego identity has not established yet.
A total of four among the current five 「Music Appreciation and Criticism」 high school textbooks contain Jeongga. Teachers need to teach their students Jeongga presented in the textbooks in a proper way according to the curriculum.
Therefore, it studied a stepwise and systematic Jeongga appreciation guidance plan and suggested a well-defined and standardized teaching · learning guidance plan with three session lessons in order that professional teachers could provide classes for appreciation of Jeongga of fine quality without receiving Korean traditional music guidance education. For this, yeo-chang gagok u-rak “The Wind is,” pyeong sijo “Is the Sun Up Yet on the East Sky,” and gasa “Hwang-gye-sa” were selected. Arrangement of these pieces ended with the following results.
First, the study on 2015 revised 「Music Appreciation and Criticism」 textbooks showed that a total of four textbooks out of five contained Jeongga. Furthermore, various musical concepts were presented in the activities for learning Jeongga and the relevant contents of each of the five textbooks, and in particular, musical forms, accompaniment and appreciation were mostly dealt with.
Second, as 2015 revised curriculum recognizes the cultural value of Jeongga and emphasizes its educational meaning, Jeongga takes a considerably important place. However, not many textbooks contain this, which indicates that Jeongga is rarely dealt with in the actual educational field compared to its value presented in the curriculum. Therefore, textbooks published by the five publishers which are going to be actually used in the educational field should increase the proportion of Jeongga content included in them.
Third, in the study on learning guidance, musical characteristics of Jeongga and appreciation of it were selected as learning contents, and the teaching · learning guidance plan consisted of the first session (musical characteristics of gagok and appreciation of it), the second session (musical characteristics of sijo and appreciation of it), and the third session (musical characteristics of gasa and appreciation of it / comprehensive comparison with Jeongga).
Fourth, in the pre and post questionnaires with regard to the interest in Jeongga, "neutral" had the highest percentage in the pre questionnaire while "interested" had the highest percentage in the post questionnaire, which indicates that the class based on proper way of appreciation is effective in arousing students' interest.
Hopefully, this study will help students to learn the musical concept of Jeongga with a correct appreciation and understanding of Korean traditional vocal music, and various teaching methods will be applied to not only Jeongga classes but also other Korean traditional music teaching · learning to invigorate Korean traditional music classes.
