Both the Eastern and the Western worlds have exhibited their interest in physiognomy through their desire to know about the future over the course of human life, regardless of social classes. As physiognomy is, in principle, a cultural code that reads the outer appearance of one’s physical body, the Eastern world’s physiognomy and that of the Western world are inherently different. The Western world’s physiognomy consists of prophecy and personality-analysis whereas the Eastern world’s physiognomy has a dualistic structure of outer appearance and inner character. The Western world’s prophetic physiognomy reads one’s destiny, which usually tends to be individualistic. It is very similar to the Eastern world’s static physiognomy that reads outer appearance, or a portion of a part of the body. The Western world’s personality-analysis physiognomy reads one’s face, which tends to be social in nature. That the Eastern physiognomy reads inner character confirms the physiognomies of the East and the West are fundamentally different. Indeed, in the Eastern physiognomy, inner character puts more emphasis on acquired appearance rather than the appearance that one is born with. Also, the Eastern physiognomy goes beyond than that and ultimately aims to cultivate virtues. This means the Eastern physiognomy does not stop at reading one’s fortune but pursues more humanistic life through morality and self-discipline. This study looks into physiognomy from the perspective of restoring humanity by re-visiting the humanistic values that the Eastern physiognomy implies. Such an attempt would serve as a focal point that helps unveil the identity of the Eastern physiognomy.
The theoretical backgrounds of the Eastern physiognomy are Um-Yang(陰陽), Sa-Sang(四象), and Oh-Haeng(五行). The ideological systems are organically correlated and dynamic in terms of harmony and balance, Moreover, it has the characteristics of the theory of the three elements(三才思想), and the principle of the unity between heaven and man(天人合一). Unlike that of the Western world, the Eastern physiognomy has an advantage that it can assess elusive aspects as well since it observes one’s complexion, and carries significant meaning in terms of psychology as inner character is exhibited through physical form, complexion, and facial expression.
This study aims to enhance the academic status of physiognomy and to suggest a way forward for the mankind to lead a proactive life through the humanistic values within physiognomy, by thoroughly analyzing the theoretical backgrounds and the ideological systems of the Eastern physiognomy.
In the Eastern physiognomy, Um-Yang(陰陽), Sa-Sang(四象), and Oh-Haeng(五行) are arrayed on a person’s face in accordance with the theoretical principles of co-existence and incompatibility. The face and body are divided into up and low, left and right, and front and back, each of which represents Um(陰) and Yang(陽) respectively, and then subcategorized into eyes, nose, lips, forehead, ears, and etc. Sa-Sang(四象) means the four body constitution types of Taeyangin(太陽人), Taeumin(太陰人), Soyangin(少陽人) and Souemin(少陰人) in Oriental studies, and the Humoral theory that suggested the concept of four humors of blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm in Western studies. Also, based on a person’s constitution or the directional concept, the up side is categorized as south, the lower side as north, the left as east and the right as west. Oh-Haeng(五行) refers to a person’s body type. Oh-Seong(五星) refers to Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Venus, and Mercury.
The Eastern physiognomy views humans and the nature organically correlated, and places heavy importance on the harmony and balance of Um(陰) and Yang(陽). Physiognomy should not stop at reading portions of a part of a static body, but rather should focus on the overall fluidity and dynamism. As well as the outer appearance of the face, it should try to read inner characters through facial expressions and gestures.
As the development of civilization and science caused human alienation in modern society, physiognomy could be one solution to overcome such human alienation and restore humanity through communication and unity. Moreover, physiognomy can be said to be an on-going activity that seeks life with human dignity through humanistic reasoning. Therefore, physiognomy should be developed into an integrated academic science through interdisciplinary approach and exchange with academic fields necessary for human life, such as criminology, psychology, plastic surgery, business management, and medicine.
From the perspective of physiognomy, the basis of the mind forms inner energy in accordance with the union of the body and the universe, and the fundamentals of this inner energy turn into one’s characters. Such characters are exhibited through feelings, shown as senses of superiority and inferiority, positive and negative attitudes, and external gestures and messages. Whereas people had to passively live with the faces they were born with in the past, modern society is an era of proactiveness and self-directed life. In physiognomy, the balance of the outer appearance of the face and the inner character are deeply related to the person’s success. Therefore, any research regarding physiognomy should be approached in cultural and historical context since physiognomy can be a principle that serves as a cultural code that recognizes one’s outer appearance and inner character.
The ultimate goal of physiognomy is eloquently illustrated in the old classic “Mauisanbeop (麻衣相法)” that goes, “Kwansang-bulyeo-simsang, Simsang-bulyeo-deoksang (觀相不如心相, 心相不如德相).” This signifies that inner character is more important than physiognomy, and virtue more important than inner character. This means that the Eastern physiognomy ultimately aims to reach the state of virtuousness, and humans must possess virtues through self-discipline. In other words, from the perspective of physiognomy, instead of living a passive life, restrained with the outer appearance of the face they are born with, people must build their own lives proactively. Therefore, physiognomy naturally entails moral cultivation or ethical enlightenment, and seeks to reach the state of self-actualization or self-completion through autonomous self-discipline. The ultimate goal of physiognomy is to industriously work on self-discipline in order for humans to possess virtues. By acquiring and utilizing such theoretical systems of physiognomy, individuals can develop themselves, lead a life with human dignity, and ultimately learn about their self-identity that they can use as a guiding light for living a humanistic life. As aforementioned, this study hopes to eliminate misconception and prejudice against the Eastern physiognomy by shedding a light on the identity of the Eastern physiognomy, and to newly discover and utilize the humanistic values implied in the Eastern physiognomy.
