The purpose of this thesis is to find out effect of place-based learning using local places on the fostering of glocal citizen capabilities among elementary school student. The first research question in this research is to find out how place-based learning affects students' perception of the region. and The second question is whether place-based learning is effective in fostering students' glocal citizen capabilities. To this end, we considered the connection between UN-SDGs(Sustainable Development Goals) and places in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, and derived the themes of this research class based on this. In addition, the place and social science unit of Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do were selected related to the subject of this research class. After looking at Smith's five place-based learning practices, we developed and applied place-based classes to foster glocal citizen capabilities using the practice strategies of Cultural Research, Natural Research, and Real-Life Problem Solving. In addition, the effectiveness of applying place-based learning is analyzed in two ways: fostering glocal citizen capabilities and positive perception of the region. We then discuss the educational implications of place-based learning based on the above two analyses.
A place is a part of everyday life that students meet every day, and it is a place where they can have meaningful experiences where real learning related to life can begin. This is why place-based learning in local places can be more contextual and meaningful education. Since the goal of global citizens education is to understand the interdependence of the global community and practice global issues with responsibility, it is important to find and act responsibly on how global issues at the regional level are linked to national and world-class issues. In this sense, "place" could be a place for learning to develop glocal citizen capabilities and practice with responsibility. This study was conducted on 25 students(6 graders) in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, and place-based learning was conducted for the third time (total, 12th time) by subject (peace, gender equality, justice value realization, sustainable production and consumption, clean environment and eco-friendly energy). The flow of learning in this place-based learning consisted of closing global problems(1st time)-presenting places in our region(2nd time)-discussing and discussing global problem solving(3rd time)-strengthening willingness to practice and act in our region (4th time).
At the end of each execution study, class analysis, feedback, and reflection results were reflected in the next execution study. In the first round of practice, as the second and third rounds went on, students were more responsible for understanding and practicing global problem solving. In addition to creating a peace and sustainable map of Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, the second study included a sustainable production and consumption action plan. In the third study, we added an activity to investigate and present environmental pollution in our region.
The results of the three-round implementation study were as follows : First, Through Place-Based Learning, the places around students' daily lives have been changed to meaningful places and learned the joy of learning through places. Places that students usually pass by or routinely encountered with their families around the neighborhood on weekends were meaningless, but through place-based classes, they became places with special meaning (peace, sustainable, and eco-friendly) for students. In addition, students were interested in learning knowledge from social studies textbooks in connection with local places, enjoyed listening to their friends' presentations through location surveys, and the concentration of classes was higher than other general classes.
Second, Place-Based Learning allowed students to see places in Gyeonggi-do from a national and global perspective, and fostered the global citizen's ability to practice global values in the region. Through their friend’s presentations, discussions, and discussions, students were able to view local places from a national and global perspective and found that they were related to each other. It also understands that regions, countries, and the world are connected to global problems and finds that small practices in regions can contribute to solving global problems.
Third, the perception of Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, has changed positively. Through Place-Based Learning, students have increased their pride and positive perception of Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, where they live. This means that learning through local places can enhance not only curriculum learning, but also understanding and affection for the region.
