Although several technology-based cognitive rehabilitation programs exist to enhance executive functions, they are limited for children with intellectual disabilities in terms of task difficulty and scope of training. In this study, an app-based cognitive rehabilitation program called ‘YESS(Yonsei Executive function training System for Special kids)’ was developed to enhance executive functions among children with intellectual disabilities, and its effectiveness was examined. In study 1, 51 participants were randomly assigned to either training group or control group. Participants’ executive functions and their parents’ parental stress were assessed before and after approximately 2 months(66 sessions) of training. As a result, no significant training effect was observed. In study 2, the program was modified and supplemented based on the results of Study 1, and the effectiveness of the program was reexamined with more extensive intervention period(5 months, 100 sessions) and additional measurements. 48 participants were randomly assigned to either training group or control group. In addition to the same executive function tasks and a parent questionnaire in Study 1, two direct observation tasks were conducted to measure generalization of effects into daily life. After training, the training group who used YESS showed significant improvement in the planning task and direct observation tasks, and the training group’s parents also reported significant decrease in parenting stress. These results show that YESS is effective for enhancing cognitive function of children with intellectual disabilities, and also suggest that YESS is socially validated.
