The purpose of this study is to analyze the airline's perceived risk and airline's choice attributes in the COVID-19 Pandemics situation, and to explore the effects of airline's relationship and choice attributes on quality -satisfaction and trust. Furthermore, this study is likely to present the operational direction of airlines and seek for changes necessary for safe air travel of passengers.
With COVID-19 still ongoing, a canonical correlation analysis was conducted to determine the relationship between airline risk perception and airline choice attributes to understand how each variable affects airline satisfaction and trust.
As a result of this research is significant in helping airlines respond correctly to the COVID-19 era and further develop marketing strategies for the post-Corona era, and in the event of another Pandemics coming.
This study consists of two parts, the academic study and the empirical study.
First of all, this research reviewed the concept of COVID-19 pandemics and Airline's perceived risk, choice attributes and relational quality – satisfaction and trust according to the relationship between each variable based on domestic and foreign professional books and related articles, a website to set up a research model and the theory. Furthermore, a questionnaire was organized based on prior research and conducted.
Based on the total of 300 samples taken for the demographic analysis and the survey results, empirical analysis was conducted and also path analysis was conducted through frequency analysis, reliability and feasibility analysis, canonical correlation analysis, positive factor analysis, and structural model. The collected data was analyzed using the SPSS Statistics 21.0 Statistical Package Program.
The findings and implications are as follows.
First, the airline's perceived risk and choice attributes are mutually influential, which can be utilized in the airline's marketing policies. Despite the situation in the global aviation industry, which has become difficult due to the COVID-19 Pandemics situation, the impact of airline passengers' awareness of the COVID-19 epidemic and the airline's choice attributes can be revealed to enhance the airline's image of safety and trust while keeping the safety of passengers using the aircraft.
Second, among the sub-factors of airline's perceived risk, social·psychological, functional risks have a negative impact on satisfaction and on the other hand, functional, social·psychological risks, and time·economic risks have a negative impact on trust.
This suggests that in the context of COVID-19, users are affected by social perspectives, and that the perceived risk caused by COVID-19 is not affected by airlines and that there are few cases of infection in the aircraft, suggesting that thorough quarantine and hygiene control systems must be developed to maintain customer trust.
Third, among the sub-factors of Airline's choice attributes, in-flight services, COVID-19 related attributes and social reputation were shown to have statistically significant positive effects on satisfaction, and in-flight services, booking·ticketing services, COVID-19 related attributes, and social reputation factors were shown to have a positive influence on trust.
As the preceding study, in-flight service can be seen as the most important airline selective attribute, and since it represents a high-impact relationship between COVID-19 related perceived risk and COVID-19 related choice attributes, it means that in-flight service should be applied in preparation for the COVID-19 situation as a way to reduce the risk of infection and increase satisfaction of users.
Fourth, the satisfaction of airline passengers has a significant positive effect on their confidence in the airline. This is the result of supporting the preceding paper that trust in satisfaction is formed as a leading factor. In particular, efforts should be made to lower the functional risk, social·psychological risk perception, which is a sub-factors of airline's perceived risk affecting satisfaction. And try to enhance the quality of in-flight services, COVID-19 response and airline's reputation, which is a sub-factors of airline's choice attributes.
The results of this study showed that the passenger's perceived risk and the airline's choice attributes were changed in the COVID-19 situation, and empirical analysis was conducted on the impact of each factor on the quality of the relationship with the customer. It provided implications for the airline industry's hard time. It is also thought to be the basis for the study against another Pandemics post-COVID.
