The purpose of this study is to propose a ballet program for the purpose of rehabilitation using a ballet port de bras for the rehabilitation of patients after breast cancer surgery suffering from upper body movement limitations and pain.
After breast cancer surgery, patients suffer from chronic pain and limited upper body range of motion, as well as the sequelae on the upper body movement due to lymph node dissection. This leads to difficulties in returning to daily life and negative psychological experiences. Therefore, rehabilitation treatment is a very important element in the physical and psychological recovery of patients after breast cancer surgery.
In this study, a total of seven breast cancer patients who could respond in a questionnaire survey and interview were selected as a population from among those who had experience in breast cancer surgery through a breast cancer-related club to conduct an open questionnaire survey, and results were derived by combining the results of the questionnaire survey with previous studies. The conclusions are as follows.
First, the upper body discomfort felt by patients after breast cancer surgery differed according to the surgical methods and treatment methods. Although most of the patients complained of discomfort in the upper body, the discomfort and pain were particularly severe in patients who were receiving chemotherapy in addition to the surgery. In addition, the duration of the upper body discomfort was less than 10 minutes on average, and the patients reported that the discomfort worsened in the late afternoon or at night. In addition, there were many patients who felt uncomfortable with the daily activities such as raising their arms or applying a strain regardless of time.
Second, patients with a high degree of discomfort participated in the postoperative rehabilitation program, and the programs in which the patient participated included yoga, manual therapy, physical therapy, and PT exercise. In addition, all patients who participated in the rehabilitation program responded that their physical discomfort was relieved after participation in the program, and it brought about positive effects on their emotional state. Most of the patients who did not participate in the rehabilitation program were performing home training at home or were carrying out simple walking exercises, and althugh they were not currently participating in the rehabilitation program, they were considering participating in the program because they felt discomfort in the upper body over time after the surgery.
Third, most patients after breast cancer surgery experienced negative psychological changes after surgery. In particular, many patients felt depressed due to physical discomfort, pain, and paresthesia, and also felt a sense of loss and depression because of external changes due to the loss of the breast and chemotherapy, and changes in daily life patterns. In addition, the stress due to the fear of cancer recurrence and metastasis further worsened the patients' negative emotional state.
Fourth, in the survey on the perception of the rehabilitation ballet program, positive results were drawn from all patients indicating that the rehabilitation ballet program will help rehabilitation after breast cancer surgery. Stretching and flexibility improvement were the effects the most commonly expected by the patients among the effects that can be obtained through rehabilitation ballet, and there were many opinions that unlike other rehabilitation exercises, rehabilitation ballet would be interesting and not boring.
