구어에 나타난 '그러니까'의 담화기능 고찰

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 구어에 나타난 ‘그러니까’의 담화기능을 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. ‘그러니까’의 의미를 언어 사용의 담화로 확장해 살펴보는 것은 담화문법 연구의 하나로 이해된다. 담화문법은 언어의 의미를 문장 안에서만 파악하는 데 한계가 있음을 인정하고 담화의 영역으로 확장했을 때, 제대로 된 의미를 알 수 있다는 연구 분야이다.
‘그러니까’는 문어보다 구어에서 월등하게 많이 나타는데 이는 다른 ‘그러-’계열 접속부사들 중 ‘그러니까’만이 보이는 특별한 양상이다. 즉, ‘그러니까’는 담화기능이 발달하고 고착화된 것으로 이해된다. 그렇다면 ‘그러니까’는 더욱 담화문법적인 시각에서 논의하는 것이 필요하겠다.
대부분의 선행연구는 ‘그러니까’의 담화기능을 제시하는 데 집중하여 각 담화기능에 대한 구체적인 논의가 부족했다는 한계가 있다. 따라서 본고는 ‘그러니까’의 담화기능을 열거하는 데에서 나아가 각 담화기능의 기원을 밝히고자 하였다. 구체적으로 ‘그러니까’의 담화기능을 ‘그러-’계열 접속부사와 ‘-니까’와의 상관관계 속에서 파악하는 데 집중했다. 또한 ‘그러니까’의 각 담화기능이 실현될 때, 선·후행 발화의 특징과 공기 양상을 살펴보며 ‘그러니까’의 담화기능을 담화의 전체 흐름 속에서 이해하고자 하였다.
1장은 본고의 서론으로서 연구 목적과 연구 대상을 밝히고 연구 전개 과정에 대한 간략한 서술이 이뤄진다. 2장에서는 본고의 논의 전개에 있어서 필요한 이론적 논의를 담았다. 담화에 나타난 ‘그러니까’의 이해를 위해 본래 품사인 접속부사에 대한 전반적인 이해가 필요하다. 따라서 2.1에서는 접속부사의 개념을 소개하고 접속부사의 범주 설정에 따른 쟁점들을 정리하였다. 또한 본고의 핵심 개념인 담화기능에 대한 설명과 담화기능과 필연적인 관계에 놓인 담화와 담화표지를 2.2에서 다루었다. 마지막 2.3에서는 ‘그러-’계열 접속부사들의 공통된 담화기능인 ‘후속 발화 요구하기’와 ‘시간벌기’를 논의하며 ‘그러니까’의 담화기능을 ‘그러-’계열 접속부사라는 큰 틀에서 이해하고자 하였다.
3장부터 5장까지는 본고의 중심 논의가 되는 부분이다. 3, 4장은 ‘그러니까’의 담화기능을 본고의 말뭉치를 통해 제시한다는 점에서 공통된다. 하지만 ‘그러니까’의 각 담화기능이 어디에서 비롯되었는지에 따라 두 개의 장으로 구분해놓았다. ‘그러니까’ 역시 ‘그러-’계열 접속부사로서 앞선 2.3에서 다루었던 ‘후속 발화 요구하기’와 ‘시간벌기’의 담화기능을 가지고 있었다. 3장은 본고의 말뭉치를 통해 ‘그러니까’가 ‘그러-’계열 접속부사의 공통된 담화기능을 가지는 것을 보이도록 한다.
4장에서는 ‘그러니까’의 담화기능으로 ‘설명하기’, ‘맞장구치기’, ‘수정하기’를 제시하였다. 위 세 가지 기능은 여타의 ‘그러-’계열 접속부사들과 비교했을 때, ‘그러니까’가 가지는 독특한 담화기능으로 이해된다. 본고는 이들 기능이 ‘그러니까’를 구성하는 연결어미 ‘-니까’에서 비롯됐다고 파악한다. 따라서 4장은 ‘그러니까’의 ‘설명하기’, ‘맞장구치기’, ‘수정하기’를 본고의 말뭉치를 통해 분명하게 제시하고 이들 기능이 ‘-니까’의 의미와 특성에서 비롯되었음을 보이는 데 목적이 있다.
‘그러니까’의 각 담화기능을 3, 4장에서 살펴보며 해당 담화기능이 출현할 때, 선·후행 발화의 특징과 특정 형태와의 공기 양상을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 5장은 이러한 실현양상이 두드러진다고 판단되는 ‘맞장구치기’, ‘설명하기’, ‘시간벌기’를 대상으로 논의가 진행되며 궁극적으로 담화기능이 담화에서 독립적으로 존재하는 것이 아니라 담화를 구성하는 여러 요소들과 유기적인 관계를 맺고 있음을 보이고자 한다.
6장은 결론으로서 기존 연구들과의 차이를 바탕으로 본고의 논지를 정리하고 본고의 의의와 한계를 서술하며 마무리한다.

This study attempts to examine the discourse function of ‘geureonikka’ in spoken language. This study, which expands the meaning of ‘geureonikka’ to the use of language, is understood as one of discourse grammar. Discourse grammar take a stance that it is impossible to grasp the full meaning of language in the scope of a sentence. So It is a research field that needs to understand the meaning of language by expanding it into discourse of language use.
‘geureonikka’ has been found to be more active in spoken language than in written language. This is a special aspect in which only ‘geureonikka’ is seen when compared to other ‘geureo-’ series of conjunctive adverbs. In other words, it seems that its discourse function was developed and fixed. Thus, it should be discussed in a more discourse grammar perspective.
Most previous studies focus on presenting the discourse function of ‘geureonikka’, so there is a limitation that each discourse function was not discussed in detail. Therefore, this study focuses on the process that ‘geureonikka’ has each discourse function and tries to interpret the discourse function from the grammatical point of view. Specifically, this paper focuses on understanding the discourse function of the ‘geureonikka’ in the correlation between the ‘geureo-’ series of conjunctive adverbs and the conjunctive ending ‘-nikka’. Also, when each discourse function of ‘geureonikka’ was appeared, we tried to understand the discourse function in the whole flow of discourse by examining the characteristics of preceding and following utterance and co-occurrence.
Chapter 1 is an introduction to this study that identifies the purpose of this paper and provides a brief description of the process of this study. Chapter 2 contains the theoretical discussions needed to develop this study. In order to understand ‘geureonikka’ in the discourse, it is necessary to have a general understanding of its original part of speech. Therefore, 2.1 introduces the concept of conjunctive adverbs and summarizes the issues related to the categorization of conjunctive adverbs. In addition, the discussion of the discourse function, which is the core concept of this paper, and the discourse and discourse markers that are inevitably related to the discourse function are discussed in 2.2. Finally, in 2.3, the common discourse functions of the ‘geureo-’ series conjunctive adverbs, ‘Requesting for Following Utterance’ and ‘Time Making’, are discussed.
Chapters 3 through 5 are the core discussions in this paper. Chapters 3 and 4 have in common that the discourse function of ‘geureonikka’ is presented through the corpus of this study, but they are categorized according to where each discourse function of ‘geureonikka’ originated. ‘geureonikka’ is also a ‘geureo-’ series of conjunctive adverbs and has a common discourse function with them of ‘Requesting for Following Utterance’ and ‘Time Making’ which were discussed in 2.3 above. The chapter 3 is meaningful in showing that ‘geureonikka’ has a common discourse function with the ‘geureo-’ series of conjunctive adverbs by the corpus of this study.
In Chapter 4, ‘Explaining’, ‘Expressing Back-Channel’ and ‘Correcting’ are presented as the discourse functions of ‘geureonikka’. These functions are understood as the unique discourse function of ‘geureonikka’ when compared with other ‘geureo-’ series conjunctive adverbs. This study finds that these functions are derived from the conjunctive ending ‘-nikka’ which constitutes ‘geureonikka’. Therefore, the purpose of chapter 4 is to present the ‘Explaining’, ‘Expressing Back-Channel’ and ‘Correcting’ functions of ‘geureonikka’ through the corpus and to show that each function comes from the meaning and characteristic of ‘-nikka’.
When the discourse function of ‘geureonikka’ appeared, it was possible to identify the characteristics of the preceding and following utterances and the co-occurrence with the specific form. Therefore, Chapter 5 discusses the realization aspects of ‘Expressing Back-Channel’, ‘Explaining’ and ‘Time Making’ of ‘geureonikka’, because the realization aspects of the three functions is judged to be clear. Ultimately, this study would like to show that discourse function of ‘geureonikka’ does not exist independently in discourse but has an organic relationship with the elements that make up discourse.
Chapter 6 mentions the purpose and nature of this study once again as a conclusion and presents the thesis of this paper focusing on the differences with previous studies. Finally, this paper finishes by describing the significance and limitations of this study.
