In this study, we observed the process in which gifted students solve math problems with surplus or incomplete information. It was intended to be effective in the belief that the process of solving math problems with surplus or incomplete information would have a positive effect on the mathematical thinking of gifted students. The problems with surplus information was developed into three types of mathematical problems, one that included information not related to problem solving, one that contained information that duplicated a particular information, and one that contained information that could be deduced through a particular information. The problems with incomplete information was developed into a problem of mathematics that requires adding fragmentary information, and a problem of mathematics that requires adding relational information. The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of mathematical thinking of gifted students in the process of solving the problems by suggesting math problems with surplus or incomplete information that do not have many opportunities to experience.
In accordance with the above objectives, the research questions were set up as follows.
First, what are the characteristics of mathematical thinking among gifted students in the process of solving mathematical problems with surplus information?
Second, what are the characteristics of mathematical thinking among gifted students in the process of solving mathematical problems with incomplete information?
Depending on the research problem, this study developed and applied math problems with surplus or incomplete information to analyze the characteristics of mathematical thinking of gifted students. The results of this study were intended to demonstrate that math problems with surplus or incomplete information could be fundamental data in gifted classes in order to develop intuitive and structural insights among the many mathematical thinking of gifted students in the process of solving math problems with surplus or incomplete information.
The results of the study are as follows:
First, the following intuitive and structural insight-related behavioral factors were frequently seen by gifted students in solving the problems with surplus information, regardless of the three types of math problems with surplus information. First, the process of identifying the relationship that constitutes the nature of the problem in order to recognize missing or unnecessary information is to 'make an intermediate check during troubleshooting whether the information indicated in the problem are necessary or unnecessary'. They also include 'separating information that is not relevant to the problem', 'identifying the whole body and the core and perceiving the relationship', 'using the relationship rather than formula' 'knowing the best problem-solving strategies and establishing a resolution plan' that can be described as actions after a study participant is aware of the unnecessary elements in the structure of the problem.
In addition, gifted students were relatively better at separating problem-related and non-related information from math problem types with data that duplicated specific information compared to other types of problems of the three types of math problems with surplus information, thus making it easier to grasp the overall structure and core of the problem.
Second, the following intuitive and structural insights were frequently seen by gifted students in solving math problems with incomplete information, regardless of the types of math problems with incomplete information. The process of identifying the relationships that make up the essence of a problem and identifying the missing or unnecessary information is to make an intermediate check on whether the information revealed in the problem are necessary or unnecessary during the resolution of the problem. 'To know what the necessary information is', 'identifying the whole body and the core and perceiving the relationship', and 'knowing the best problem-solving strategies and establishing a resolution plan' are the behaviors which are done after they recognize the deficiencies in the structure of the problem.
These findings can explain that gifted students can have a critical view of things and phenomena while developing their ability to think in an organic connection between whole and part in solving problems with surplus or incomplete information. In addition, through problems with surplus or incomplete information, one can learn to reflect on one's own problem-solving processes and consequences. Among the types of mathematical problems with surplus information, it is necessary to develop mathematical thinking of intuitive and structural insight by presenting more types of math problems that contain information that is not relevant to troubleshooting at all and information that can be deduced through specific information than those that contain information that duplicate specific information. Math problems with incomplete information of a mix of problem types that require adding fragmentary or relational information can guide gifted students to elicit the mathematical thinking of intuitive and structural insight.
