The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning of lifelong learning citizen activities. The specific research problems are as follows: ‘Why did you participate as a lifelong learner?' and ‘Why do you continue to work as a lifelong learner?’
To resolve the research problems, the researchers conducted an in-depth interview with six people who were active as lifelong learning citizen activities in a lifelong education site to analyze the meaning of continuing activities. The results of the research analyzed through this process are summarized as follows.
Lifelong learning citizen activities are volunteers who combine knowledge related to lifelong learning through a positive process, perform lifelong learning counseling and operation, and spread the value of lifelong learning to local residents. Lifelong learning citizen activities carries out activities such as lifelong learning demand survey, program development, program operation and management, lifelong learning counseling, and plays various roles such as lifelong learning leader, facilitator, guide, coordinator and professor. In other words, Lifelong learning citizen activities play the role of a lifelong educator.
Lifelong learning citizen activities have the common characteristics of residents who are interested in lifelong learning, have experience in participating, and have the will to recognize problems and practice lifelong learning in the lifelong learning. They are "learners" with a high desire to participate in learning, and have a desire for the formation of social relations and a desire for the participation of lifelong learning, and a common characteristic that they have a common sense of awareness of problems in villages that do not participate in lifelong learning and a willingness to take the initiative in solving problems of accessing lifelong learning information in the region. In addition, the fact that activities of residents can play various roles at the same time by allowing flexible time control was a reason for participation in activities of residents.
Working as Lifelong learning citizen activities, they will grow into self-directed learners, forming interpersonal relationships with various residents and experiencing various situations. The meaning of their continuing activities is as follows.
First, Lifelong learning citizen activities will have the meaning of continuing the activity through the recognition and support of the residents in the course of the activity. In the course of their activities, they are greatly rewarded by receiving people's gratitude and pride themselves on their activities and roles through their experience of being recognized for their roles as lifelong learning citizen activities
Second, lifelong learning citizen activities supports the growth of residents through lifelong learning participation, and such activities are meaningful for them to continue their activities as residents. Lifelong learning citizen activities will create an environment for residents to smoothly participate in lifelong learning, and realize the value and meaning of lifelong learning as he watches residents grow through lifelong learning. It also supports residents to return the results of their lifelong learning to the community and grow through these activities, helping them to share the results of their learning with the community through community contribution activities and talent donation activities. These activities are meaningful for the residents to continue their activities.
Third, the residents have various experiences in the process of their activities and grow on their own by solving the various problems that arise. They will feel that residents who participate in lifelong learning are growing together in the process of change and growth, which means continuing the activities of local activists.
In most lifelong learning cities, there are many people who train and use lifelong learning citizen activities at the site of lifelong education, but who have completed the process of training and actually engage in activities as lifelong learning citizen activities, and even if they carry out the activities, they often quit halfway. In this study, the purpose of the research was to explore the meaning of continuing lifelong learning citizen activities and to provide an in-depth understanding of the residents' activities.
The following items should be considered to encourage lifelong learning citizen activities based on the results of the above research and to continue their activities
First, various support for lifelong learning citizen activities in lifelong learning cities is needed. Various support is needed to recognize lifelong learning citizen activities as important human resources for lifelong learning cities, recognize their existence as policy partners of local governments and important resources in the private sector, and actively encourage their activities. Such support should be accompanied by rewards, such as increased activity costs, and methods of psychological compensation (representation, service time recognition, etc.) that recognize the outcome of the activity.
Second, support is needed to develop into an organization consisting of a learning community and capable of playing an important role in the policy of lifelong education in the region, rather than just individual lifelong learning citizen activities. The lifelong learning citizen activities need to be policy support and direction of projects that can be sustainable activities, such as the formation of groups together, participation in local community projects, and consignment of projects.
