In recent years, as the awareness of the health of modern people has increased, prevention and treatment of diseases have been effective and adult mortality has decreased. However, the serious diseases and mortality rate of children are increasing as compared with the medical effects. Currently, although children are less immune than adults, they are more likely to be infected with germs because they use medical facilities with adults and have a different emotional need than adults and have a much higher emotional anxiety in a rigid hospital setting. Thus, the need for a specialized space for children's healing space is emerged. Doctor Leland Kaiser of the University of Cololado said,“Curing is a scientific high-tech about the patient's physical body, and healing is an emotional and mental high-touch of the patient's cognitive psychology”. Thus, the positive environmental stimuli of curing and healing should be combined.
Thus, this study is to recognize the necessity of medical environment suitable for children 's illness and psychological environment and to lay the foundation for the study of healing design in child hospital design. In Chapter 1, the background, purpose, scope (conceptual, temporal, and spatial) and method of research are set up, and the lack of prior research is set as the necessity of this study.
Chapter 2, theoretical review examines the literature and research of children's hospitals and biophilic design, and then presents an analytical model by extracting characteristic elements. In chapter 3, the researcher analyzes selected children's hospitals with an analysis matrix through site visits and searches. Chapter 4 suggests biophilic design of children's hospital based on the result of case analysis in the children hospital design. In Chapter 5, the conclusions are reached and future research directions are presented. The overall conclusion is as follows. First, the characteristics of children responding to the healing environment appear in ‘early childhood and childhood’under the age of 13, and the characteristics of ‘children's emotional desire’, ‘healing preference color’, ‘preferred physical activity’, and ‘healing sense stimulation’ appear. Second, the biophilic design elements that are highly used in children's hospitals are ‘natural elements’, ‘light and space’ in Korea and ‘natural elements’, ‘natural shape’, ‘light and space’, and ‘evolved human relationships’ in overseas. All are considered comfort, stability, and agrement by inducing ALPHA-wave. Third, as a factor reducing the fear of children, ‘shape and form of nature’ is expressed as a figure of animals and plants as a 2D character or sticker in Korea, and ‘shape and form of nature’ and ‘evolved human relationship’ was expressed in various ways in terms of an objet in overseas. Domestic hospitals have also considered aesthetics and communication, but color manuals for children and new contents are needed. Fourth, for the purpose of overcrowding the emergency room and preventing infectious spread, the domestic government has shortened the stay time by ‘an exclusive joint treatment’ and ‘supplement of recruitment’. Outside the country, the disease code is separated and room and flow of human traffic are separated and solved. This should spread to many hospitals in Korea. Since this study has a limit of concept design proposal of biophilic design of children's hospital, it is necessary to further study patterns and manuals for practical design by increasing the number of cases of in-depth biophilic characteristic study.
