This study compares the three films dealing with the May 18th Gwangju Democratization Movement. It analyzes how the narrative contents of the films reenact the Movement. It looks at the three-act structures of each film, within which the flow and changes of the incident are investigated with the more detailed divisions of thirty-six dramatic situations that are proposed by Georges Polti. In addition, the study uses Roland Barthes' concepts of studium and punctum. The former means the social agreement (objective interpretation) and the universal appreciation method. The latter indicates the personal experiences (subjective interpretation) and a new appreciation method. The concepts help to analyze the cinematic images of characters that change through the Gwangju Movement.
The film, Peppermint Candy directed by Lee Chang-dong, May 18th by Kim Ji Hun, and A Taxi Driver by Jang Hoon embody the May 18th Gwangju Democratization Movement. The three films hold significance by the fact that the May 18th is expressed to the public in various ways. They also represent the changing viewpoints of each film's production time on the incident: the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s, respectively.
Peppermint Candy depicts the trauma of the May 18th by tracing an individual broken life of its protagonist, Kim Young-ho, whose purity was slaughtered by his experience of the incident. Young-ho is trapped in a circulation from the past (May 1980) and the present (1990s), which is reenacted in the film as a history that hides many truths while it becomes individualized through Young-ho. The audience feels the violence of the era through Young-ho's own and fictional experience of the May 1980 that fragments his ego. He provides the audience a perspective of a victim, not an assailant of the May 1980, and conveys the cruelty of the incident. The film criticizes the era and the state, which leads the audience to recognize how much the May 18th have destroyed the lives of individual South Koreans.
May 18 represents the May 1980 as the collective and cultural memory. The film symbolizes the army of Gwangju citizens as the community of death that is the main agent of the noble fight and sacrifice. The tragic descending structure of the film is completed with the dying community that is voluntarily formed with the citizens' wishes to protect the city from the attack of the state army. While it deals with the first 10 days of the strife of the citizens chronologically, a collective 'memory' is reinforced through their beliefs. The fight and sacrifice represent the public and historical consciousness of the May 1980 that is now familiarized to the South Korean public and imprinted in their memory.
A Taxi Driver perceives the May 1980 from a hopeful perspective through a third person viewpoint made by two outsiders. Its opening sequence describes the miscommunication between a Korean taxi driver, Kim Man-seop and a German reporter, Jurgen Hinzpeter, who are just met in Seoul. The film expands the miscommunication to that between the citizens of Gwangju and the state army. As soon as the two outsiders entered Gwangju, they immediately join the joys and sorrows of the citizens of Gwangju and become united with them to build a community. Yet, the miscommunication between the state army and Gwangju citizens got widely open. In particular, the scene in which Man-seop is anguished in Suncheon is used as an important medium to convert the descending structure of the story into a rising curve. The public shares his internal conflicts with him; he struggles with whether he will stay to keep helping the citizens or to return to Seoul. His decision to return and let the globe know about the truth of the May 18th Gwangju Democratization Movement is not only made with the audience's empathy but also creates the ascending structure. The process of how Man-seop and Peter gradually embrace the May 1980 as a part of their lives just like Gwangju citizens is a crucial issue that the film is made to the public. A community is created between the two outsiders and Gwangju citizens through communication in the film makes the public recognize the Gwangju Democratization Movement as history that should continuously be remembered. The process of the personal changes of Man-seop do not simply visualize the May 1980 as a violent incident but as a moment of historical possibilities that is hopefully solidified with the interaction between the outsiders and insiders. Man-seop not only takes the position of an objective observer, just like the film's audiences, but also functions as a perfect messenger of the interaction so that he can deliver the hope that the state violence will soon be accused as injustice.
The three films take the May 18th Gwangju Democratization Movement as historical contents that should continuously be discussed and reexamined, not as a content historically set in stone. Accordingly, there is a possibility that the Movement can and should be continuously be produced or reenacted as film and cultural content. This possibility suggests how the Movement will be continue to be a history of memory and even paid an homage as a cultural content. The diversity in the three film contents is important because their significant goals let the public recognize the May 18th Gwangju Democratization Movement as a historical content that should not be forgotten so that the future generations can be interested in and learn the historical truth of it. Furthermore, it is likely that an ideal direction is that the films contents are fused with other contents and recreated as new contents.
