The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of Nonviolent Communication(NVC) program on the interpersonal relationships of female high school students.
To achieve this purpose, the hypothesis was established as follows. First, NVC program will affect the interpersonal relationships of female high school students. Second, NVC program will affect the sub-categories of interpersonal relationships of female high school students.
The study objects were 12 female high school students selected among the first graders of K Girls' High School located in Busan who volunteered to participate in the program. Another 12 students who did not participate in the program were arranged randomly as the control group.
The NVC program of this study was based on NVC 1 and Smile Keepers, NVC program for children and teens, of Korea Center for NVC. It was carried out during 8 sessions of 50 minutes per session once every two to four weeks from March to May 2017.
To analyze the study results, the RCS(Relationship Change Scale) was carried out through the pretest and the posttest. The analysis adopts Repeated Measure ANOVA to verify the effectiveness of the program. The experience reports, questionnaires, statements by the participants in each session are analyzed for the qualitative analysis to supplement the quantitative results.
The results of the study are as follows:
The level of interpersonal relationships of the experimental group who participated in the program was improved compared to the control group who did not participate in the program. In the whole interpersonal relationships, the score of the experimental group showed a significant statistical difference compared to that of the control group. In the subcategory of interpersonal relationships, in 5 categories of satisfaction, communication, reliance, familiarity, and sensibility, the score of the experimental group shows a significant statistical difference compared to that of the control group. The analysis of the students' experience reports, questionnaires and the counselor's observations also suggested that this program had positive effects on improving interpersonal relationships of the students.
In conclusion, NVC program proved to be effective for the improvement of interpersonal relationships of female high school students.
