After the invention of Hunminjeongeum, Hangeul (the Korean alphabet)
was most frequently used in Eongan, or letters. The most basic function
of language is communication, and letters created with a written language
were used as a general means of communication in the Joseon period,
where transportation and telecommunication had hardly been developed.
Letters written in Hangeul at that time were commonly used to convey
the unique emotions of Korean people, and they were used across all social
strata, from royalty to commoners. This led to the invention of Eongandok,
a kind of textbook for Korean letter writing.
Eongandok was passed down within families in the form of transcription,
but the xerographic Eongandok was published for sales around the late
Joseon period as the number of people who wished to learn letter writing
    increased.
Eongandok is a compound word consisting of ‘eon’, meaning Hangeul,
and ‘gandok’, meaning a letter-writing style written with Chinese
characters. Eongandok thus means a writing style written in Hangeul and
was used to serve as a textbook that defined the style of Hangeul letter
    writing.
As letter writing is closely associated with communicative behavior in
daily life, the writing textbook was published to establish a style of letter
    writing.
There were various textbooks, such as Chogandok (a collection of the
Choseo format) and Husaryujib, which introduced the style of letter writing
in Chinese characters before the publication of Eongandok (Bongjoa Kim,
2004:18). Eongandok was published for Hangeul letter writing in reference
    to these previous books.
Eongandok was ultimately published in response to public demand to
help learners with self-directed learning during a time when public
education was not granted for all (the late Joseon period). The book played
a role as a guide, a textbook for letter writing that taught the basics of
letter-writing style in the Korean language.
Unfortunately, this book is hardly ever taught in the classroom, despite
the fact that this Korean writing textbook was the first of its kind to help
practice reading and writing. For this reason, this paper conducted a
comparative analysis of Eongandok and explored ways to utilize it in
    Korean language education.
Chapter Ⅱ,Ⅲ, compares and contrasts Wanpanbon (the term for
woodblock printings produced in the city of Jeonju) Eongandok with
another version, Jingbo Eongandok. The chapter first examines the basic
contents of Wanpanbon Eongandok, and finds the bases for learning in
terms of grammar and as a writing textbook referring to the achievement
standards of the 2011 Korean Language Curriculum and the 2015 Revised
    Korean Language Curriculum.
More precisely, the fundamental discussion examines the composition of
Eongandok; story composing methods, honorifics, repetition, and spelling
errors, and their positions are established by referring to the achievement
    standards of the national curriculums.
    Especially, Chapter III explains Gugaeeumhwa (palatalization);
Wonsunmoeumhwa (vowel roundedness); grammar including Nopimbeob
(the honorific system), Byeongseo (compound characters), various
orthographic rules, and terms of address; conventional expressions for letter
writing; and writing customs in order to apply them to Eongandok in
Korean language education. Then, Chapter Ⅳ suggests examples of
learning activities that meet the achievement standards in order to use
Eongandok for grammar and writing education.
The learning activities suggested in this paper were designed on the
basis of the 2015 Revised Korean Language Curriculum, which will be
    applied starting in 2018.
