다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract) kakao i 다국어 번역

The purpose of this study is to read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein in the light of Critical Posthumanism that critically examines the exclusivism of traditional humanism and its "othering" of the nonhuman others. This novel has been interpreted as a literary representation of the fear that can arise when humanity cannot control the power of science and technology. In this work, the protagonist Victor Frankenstein creates a monstrous human being who is rejected and demonized as the Other by Victor and other humans. It is necessary to examine Frankenstein in order to discuss Posthumanist ethics or the ethics of Otherness, which emphasizes tolerance for the nonhuman others.
Posthumanism is also being discussed with Transhumanism that actively utilizes science and technology to overcome the biological limitations of imperfect human beings and to enhance their possibilities. However, seeking to maximize human abilities by utilizing scientific technologies such as biotechnology, nanotechnology and robotics, Transhumanism is opposed to Posthumanism that criticizes the ideal of anthropocentrism. Above all, Posthumanism can be said to cultivate tolerant attitudes toward the nonhuman others, for example, the inclusive ethics of Otherness that rejects the anthropocentric worldview. It may be confirmed that the ethics of Otherness should be the ultimate goal of Posthumanism, while avoiding self-centered thinking and acknowledging the value of others that cannot be reduced to anything.
Especially, Critical Posthumanism seeks the possibility of a new humanism by approaching critically a dystopian position that rejects the achievements of science and technology due to technophobia or suspicion of technology. It also criticizes a utopianism based on the viewpoint of technophilia that entrusts the future of mankind to the development of science and technology. By interpreting Shelley's Frankenstein in the light of Critical Posthumanism, this study acknowledges the value of the ethics of Otherness.
