This study deals with the establishment, origin, and development of the culture of the early Bronze Age in Jeju Island. This study contradicts the existing theory which asserts the unitary establishment and development that the pattern had been degenerated and spread from the Heunamri-style earthenware to the Yeoksamdong-style earthenware, and concludes that both groups had dually established and developed their earthenware differentiated by the region and origin.
To study the individual relics found in the remains of the early Bronze age in Jeju island, the type, the pattern, and the assemblage are examined, focusing on the deep bowl earthenware. As a result, there is high probability of dual development with different origins, unlike the existing theory of unitary development by self transition, judging by the results such as the different origins of some specific relics including burnished pottery, and the emergence of new artifacts like jar with asymmetrically pointing-out mouth, integrated stone dagger, and pillar-shaped adze as assemblages with Yeoksamdong-style earthenware. This led to the establishment of the Heunamri-style relics association group and the Yeoksamdong-style relics association group. According to examining the relics focusing on burnished pottery, it is highly likely that the origins of relics are different even in the region of ‘jar with asymmetrical and pointing-out mouth,’ and assemblages have a character of the latter early Bronze age.
To clarify the origin and the period, square type dwellings of the Bronze age in Jeju island are examined. As a result, they are identified as the culture similar to Midwest, Daegu, and Jeolla province regions in the latter early Bronze age. After that, through the examination on the settlement, they are estimated as a highly sedentary settlement type.
As a result of examining the dual establishment, origin, and development of the culture of the early Bronze Age in Jeju Island through the review of the individual relics, the setting of the group of relics, and the review of the settlements and the villages, the background of the dual establishment was influenced by the social change of the transition period between early Bronze Age and pre-Songgukri stage of Gyeongsangnam province and Midwest region which relatively associated with each earthenware group. Also, two groups had different development pattern, for example, the group of Heunamri-style earthenware had a character of unstable or movable sedentary settlement, while the group of Yeoksamdong-style earthenware built stable settlement and spread regional distribution.
