The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of a dance movement therapy program on depression. The results indicated that the dance movement therapy program reduced depression and changed mental health and life satisfaction in middle-aged women. Therefore, the program was positively effective to enjoy more stable and healthier middle age in middle-aged women.
This study was conducted with middle-aged women residing in the G area. A questionnaire survey were distributed to 420 middle-aged women attending centers and institutions in the G area from March to April, 2017. A self-administration method was used to complete the questionnaire survey and a convenience sampling method was used for sampling. 23 questionnaires were exclude because they included omitted items, double answers, identical answers, or unfaithful answers and 397 were used for the final analysis. Frequency analysis and one-way ANOVA were used to analyze demographic characteristics and correlation analysis was applied to examine the correlation of variables. Multiple regression analysis was used to examine effects between variables. Structural equation modeling was conducted to verify the hypotheses of the study. Finally, the following conclusions were drawn.
First, there was a difference in depression, mental health, and life satisfaction according to demographic characteristics.
Second, depression treatment influenced mental health.
Third, depression treatment influenced life satisfaction.
Fourth, mental health influenced life satisfaction.
Therefore, the findings suggested that the dance movement therapy program was effective to treat depression and depression treatment influenced mental health and life satisfaction in middle-aged women. Also, improved mental health was associated with higher life satisfaction.
