어머니의 자율성 지지가 유아의 정서적, 사회적 유능성에 미치는 영향 : 유아의 실행기능의 매개효과

The purpose of this study was to examine the relations among maternal autonomy support, preschoolers’ executive function and preschoolers’ emotional and social competence. In addition, the mediating role of preschoolers’ executive function between maternal autonomy support and preschoolers’ emotional and social competence was investigated. A total of 245 mothers of preschoolers who were at the age of 3 to 5 years participated in this study. Data were collected with maternal reports and analyzed using t-test, Pearson’s correlations, and simple and multiple regression analyses.
The primary results of the present study were as follows:
First, maternal autonomy support was significantly related to preschoolers’ emotional and social competence. Second, maternal autonomy support was significantly related to preschoolers’ executive function. Third, preschoolers’ executive function was significantly related to emotional and social competence. Fourth, preschoolers’ executive function partially mediated the relations between maternal autonomy support and preschoolers’ emotional and social competence respectively.
These findings suggest the importance of mediating effect of preschoolers’ executive function on the relations between maternal autonomy support and preschoolers’ emotional and social competence. Findings from this study with the emphasis on the importance of preschoolers' executive function have implications for future research and practice, suggesting the need of programs designed to improve preschoolers’ executive function.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 어머니의 자율성 지지, 유아의 실행기능 및 유아의 정서적·사회적 유능성 간 관계를 살펴보고 유아의 실행기능이 어머니의 자율성 지지가 유아의 정서적·사회적 유능성에 미치는 영향을 매개하는지 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위하여 만 3~5세 유아 245명의 어머니를 대상으로 자료를 수집하였다. 어머니의 자율성 지지를 측정하기 위해 Grolnick, Ryan과 Deci(1991)가 개발한 부모에 대한 지각 척도 중 자율성 지지 문항과 Williams와 Deci(1996)가 개발한 자율성 지지 측정을 위한 학습풍토 질문지, Soenens 등(2007)의 자율성 지지 척도를 토대로 노보혜, 박성연과 지연경(2011)이 수정·보완한 척도를 사용하였다. 유아의 실행기능은 Gioia, Isquith, Guy와 Kenworthy(2000)가 개발한 아동용 실행기능척도를 기초로 유아용으로 제작한 Isquith, Gioia와 Espy(2004)의 실행기능 평정척도-유아용(BRIEF-P)을 서정은과 박혜원(2011)이 번안한 척도를 사용하였다. 유아의 정서적 유능성을 측정하기 위하여 Salovey와 Mayer(1997)의 정서지능 모형에 근거하여 이병래(1998)가 제작한 정서지능 척도를 사용하였으며, 유아의 사회적 유능성은 도현심(1994)이 개발한 사회적 능력척도 유치원용(Social Competence Scale-Kindergarten)을 사용하여 측정하였다. 수집된 자료는 t-test와 일원분산분석, 상관관계분석을 실시하였고, 매개분석은 Baron과 Kenny(1986)의 세 단계 모형을 단순회귀분석과 중다회귀분석을 통하여 분석하였다.
본 연구의 연구문제에 대한 주요 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 어머니가 자율성을 지지하는 양육행동을 더 보일수록 유아의 실행기능 수준이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 유아의 실행기능 수준이 높을수록 유아의 정서적·사회적 유능성이 높았다. 셋째, 어머니가 자율성을 지지하는 양육행동을 많이 보일수록 유아의 정서적·사회적 유능성이 높게 나타났다. 넷째, 유아의 실행기능은 어머니의 자율성 지지가 유아의 정서적 유능성 및 사회적 유능성에 미치는 영향을 부분적으로 매개하였다.
본 연구는 유아기에 급격히 발달하는 실행기능에 주목하여, 실행기능에 영향을 주고 받는 두 변인인 어머니의 자율성 지지와 유아의 정서적·사회적 유능성 간의 관계에서 실행기능의 매개적 역할을 살펴보았다. 본 연구의 결과는 실행기능 향상을 위한 양육행동의 중요성을 강조하는 부모교육 프로그램 및 유아기 실행기능 발달을 위한 훈련프로그램의 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
