The division of the Korean Peninsula has been going on for over 70 years, and the cultural gap between South and North Korean society is spreading by that time. Nevertheless, efforts to unify South and North Korea are a significant task that can not be abandoned. Religion is more heterogeneous than other sectors. Therefore, this study considers that religion can play a positive role in the social integration of South and North Korea, and has paid attention to the role of Buddhism that has been associated with the history of our nation for over 1700 years.
The main purpose of this study is summarized in three ways. First, it examines the validity of the Buddhist approach to social integration of the two Koreas. The principle of "coexistence, coexistence and cohesion" of Korean Buddhist tradition philosophy and Buddhist unification declaration provides the ideological basis of inter-Korean social integration and inter-Korean Buddhist exchange cooperation and plays a sufficient role in practical approach. It will be possible.
Second, we analyze the development process of interchange cooperation between Buddhism in South and North. It is identify the characteristics and problems. In the mid-1990s, humanitarian aid to North Korea began, while the inter-Korean joint bishops and Geumgangsan Singyesa restoration projects were carried out, resulting in meaningful results. Especially, it is a characteristic aspect that North and South Buddhism and North Korean Buddhism, which are the subjects of exchange and cooperation projects, showed positive development in the direction of change and functioned in the universal sense of restoration of national homogeneity beyond interchange of religious meaning.
Thirdly, it is necessary to draw up developmental tasks of inter - Korean Buddhist exchange and cooperation. First of all, it is necessary to create an environment of mutual coexistence and coexistence between the two Koreas and secure the conditions for the implementation of exchange and cooperation projects. Next, we should complete the institutionalization by developing cooperation between Buddhism in South and North Korea gradually, securing autonomy from political and military situation and establishing public-private cooperation system. In order to promote interchange of Buddhism between South and North Korea, it is necessary to create a model of sustainable exchange and cooperation, to shift from the humanitarian aid to North Korea based on the existing emergency relief to the development cooperation support, and to preserve and utilize the Buddhist cultural heritage.
