The purpose of this study is to develop a ballet education program for adults by focusing on aspects of their learning through the application of Bartenieff Fundamentals(BF) and Shape Analysis. For this purpose, the study develops a ballet education program for adults consisted of six lessons, through the application of features of adults that are objects of this study, main ideas of BF, 6-step Developmental Pattern theory, Shape Flow and Directional Shape in Shape Analysis. The program’s purpose, contents, and characteristic of the teaching method are as follows:
First, the program is composed in order to perform a ballet motion effectively realizing the right body connectivity by having time to concentrate on one’s own body and soul on the base of BF and Shape Analysis.
Second, The contents are composed to improve functional and expressional ability by applying the body connectivity pattern to the ballet motion, according to 6-step Developmental Pattern of BF and Shape Analysis.
Third, teaching methods merge practice and theory, composed to make trainees recognize the basic principle of motion and characteristic of each ballet motion through visual materials in the introduction stage. In development stage, lessons are composed to help use muscles and joints correctly and recognize the body connectivity by performing Barre and Center work ballet motion on the base of BF and Shape Analysis. The finishing stage consists of question and discussion regarding the lessons.
This study employs qualitative research methods to abstract application results of this ballet educational program for adults. 13 adult trainees who had experienced the ballet more than 8 months were chosen as objects of the study and they had the pretest, 6-time research lessons, and the posttest from October 27th to November 11th in 2016. And photos and video recording, participant observation, in-depth interviews, pre and post test questionaries and the other research tools are used to collect data and through coding, abstracting cases and data analysis, the study concludes as follows:
First, it turns out that trainees are able to recognize their bodies in detail by applying BF theory to the ballet motions. Concretely they show the qualitative improvement in performing ability of ballet motions by checking their bodies’ maladjusted condition and learning the principle of movement regarding connectivity which is necessary for repatterning.
Second, trainees are able to improve their emotional recognition through body moving by applying Shape Theory to the ballet motion. Concretely when trainees performed ballet techniques, by applying Shape Flow breath method they showed improvement in emotional expression by completed breath, as well as the body connectivity which is necessary for each motion.
Third, they are able to improve shape recognition on space by applying BF and Shape Analysis to the ballet motion. Concretely they showed the deep shape recognition on movement with being conscious of balance of motions expressed in space through connecting body and space, by understanding sagittal plane, transverse plane and frontal plane and grasping motion’s third dimension.
In this way, the ballet educational program applying BF and Shape Analysis enhanced body recognition, emotional recognition and space balance recognition.
And during the process of applying the program, adults who are objects of the study reacted as follows:
First, when they performed ballet motions after recognizing connectivity of each stage in BF, they reacted they felt improvement in functional and expressional aspects of motions than before.
Second, they reacted they were able to understand clearly the principle of movement through BF and Shape Analysis, which they had understood abstractly.
Third, they reacted they were able to analyze the reason why they had difficulty in performing motions and check the connectivity which is necessary for performing the right motions, due to realizing the connectivity which is necessary for each ballet motion and experiencing the maladjusted condition directly.
Considering the result of the study, the study is the case of developing the ballet educational program for adults through the application of main ideas of BF and Shape Analysis and suggests possibility and utility which can be applicable as a way in order to enhance quality in the ballet education for adults.
