The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the healing elements inherent in ‘poetry based on forest and meditation’ focusing on Korean ancient and modern poets. Today, 'healing' is one of the biggest concerns which have fueled societal interest among the masses. Even though the word of 'healing' is used in many fields, the meaning of it seems to be utmost used in natural healing area, particularly in the healing field attained through forest-based meditation.
Forest, improving the health by refreshing body and mind and by taking it easy, is the material and spiritual resources which enrich our life as well as taking a great role in seeking the spiritual origin and original nature. On top of that, the sounds of nature such as various phytoncide, bird-calls, the sound of water and wind, etc., are important elements which makes our five sense at home.
That's why modern people who live a busy and tired life try to contemplate their life by walking in forest, by finding solace in tired body and mind and, they also try to obtain a new vitamin.
On the one hand, in a sense, contemplating nature can be said the meditation to look into the self. So, many people go to the forest to realized the meaning of the simplicity and emptiness after letting busy and avaricious mind for a moment by introspecting their inner landscape as well as outer one. Like this, the forest-based meditation which makes us contemplate inner self has a function to heal hurt in the heart and to let mind go blank to realize a slow and simple life.
The point is that forest is a new healing space beyond the space only for the rest. Then, forest-based meditation is one of the important healing therapy to see things as there are and to overcome greed, fullness, grasping, anger, and anxiety, etc.
On top of that, poetry, frankly expressing the emotion which springs up from the deep inner heart, has different spectrums of mind, so that it has a deep reverberation because of poet's great intuition and insight to bring life's great change.
Actually a poet has an ability to create things we can't see and hear vividly and he has an ability to led us to a world of new recognition as well. Hence, poems produced by a poet always give us new echo and awareness. That's why we can relieve and heal oppressed and torn mind only by reading and understanding the poetry full of vivid inspiration and imagination. In this vein, poetry works as a healing mechanic to make pained and fatigued mind relaxed and also to make dim consciousness more clear.
Poetry is a good intermediation which expresses human emotion. Therefore, it seems that the speculation and real experience to combine the poetry produced on the basis of forest and meditation has healing elements transcending the limit of poets and readers; it contains psychological healing elements: the original function of literature. Consequently, the poetry, produced on the basis of forest and meditation, can let inner consciousness vivid through imaginative expressions.
Hence, poetry therapy can heal the tensions, depression, sense of loss, anxiety through self-reflection and self-discovery and in the end, lead us to the field of body and mind healing. So then, modern poetry and Seon poetry might be used as a good therapy to solve the dissolution, inconsistency, discord, suffering in modern society by means of 'esthetics and transcendency'. In oder to identify this point, this study will be developed in the following oder.
Chapter 1 presents the purpose, method and scope, and precedent researches of this study. Chapter 2 attempts to show the theoretical background of the therapy of forest-base meditation poetry: the meaning and effect of forest healing, the meaning and origin of forest meditation, and the healing elements of forest-based meditation poetry.
Chapter 3 examines the healing elements of poetry based on the mutual response to forest, the sounds from forest, and life solidarity in the forest. It is described in a more vivid poetic way based on the thinking of 'objects and self are one' through meditative contemplation toward nature and based on the outcome of enlightenment and sympathy as well.
Chapter 4 identifies the healing elements inherent in meditation poetry, chiefly focusing on healing hurt in the heart, solace, letting it go, emptiness and fullness, care and communication. In particular, tea which implies awakening is an important element for the sympathy and care in everyday life. Meditation and tea are often not two but one, which means that there is no difference between the mind training and tea ceremony. Consequently, tea is considered as a vehicle for clearness and emptiness. That's why the world of enlightenment through the good combination of Seonistic intuition and poetic imagination in harmony with nature is well depicted in Seon masters' poetry.
Chapter 5 looks into the application of the forest-based meditation therapy program and its effect: more in detail, the concept, background, method and scope of the forest-based meditation therapy program. The program's application and effect was identified through a before and after index testing chiefly on selected members.
Finally, in chapter 6, it will be mentioned that the importance of this study is in setting up a new concept of the forest-based meditation poetry therapy program, and the program can be widely applied to many fields because of the very harmonious and interpenetrating expression of poetic mind and Seon mind.
