Contemporary art today uses patterns in various ways and for various purposes. We can easily find different patterns of shapes and colors used in commercial advertisements or designs, which reflects the significant place patterns have come to take in today’s society. Nevertheless, despite this diversified usage of patterns, very little research has been done in contemporary art on this subject. In addition, the concept of pattern has been quite limited in its meaning, only to describe repetitive or regular acts.
The present research does not limit to defining patterns as simply a repetition of the same shapes or rules. Instead, it sees patterns as a way to show and observe differences through repetitions, and approaches the meaning of these patterns as seen in contemporary art or research subjects from an artistic, cultural, and philosophical perspective. It therefore overcomes the pre-existing tendency of treating patterns as ‘decorative art’ or design, and instead considers them as part of the human thought to understand the world and an artistic act.
For this purpose, this research considers the art history of patterns, and focuses on the various pattern styles as observed throughout art history, including Art Nouveau, Neo Plasticism, De Stijl, and the Bauhaus movement, which aimed at creating architecture, craft, and art in a modern language. These trends show the changes patterns went through under social influences and relations, and provide useful case studies to view the history of patterns up to the modern era.
The research further applies Gille Deleuze’s concept of ‘difference and repetition’ as the theoretical tool to investigate the ontological and artistic characteristics of patterns. According to Deleuze, difference and repetition are not conflicting concepts, but rather overlapping ones. The concept of ‘repetition’ of a uniform object we can see in patterns can be understood alongside the issue of difference, and can be analyzed in terms of encompassing differences. Repetition as difference is a dynamic repetition, creates meaning, and acts as a practical force that substantiates the diversity of existence. Accordingly, patterns in works of art are a repetition of uniqueness.
My first step has been to look at the works and researches of artists such as Agnes Martin, Jim Lambie, and Sarah Morris, and the similarities and differences among their patterns. I have thus looked into the different emotional, social, and philosophical meanings similar patterns hold.
In my work of trying to visualize the concept of repetition, colors, and shapes, I have approached patterns in terms of motility of rhythm and repetitive acts. I provide a different perspective and analysis of the combination of flower patterns and repetitive shapes, away from the prejudice against what is ordinary and decorative. By doing so, I show that elements of the ordinary and the sublime space of art have similar values, and this process illustrates the first level of patterns in this research. The ‘layer series’, which is a result of additional layers of grid patterns over each other, creates a new order alongside the repetitive rhythm created by the harmony of lines and colors. The book art project, which transposes books into a new form and space of painting, brings multiple drawings into one book and therefore visualizes the repetitive act of flipping through the pages, and makes the audience aware of the repetitive acts of time and space.
In this project, I have tried to argue that although patterns are fundamentally based on repetitiveness and periodicity, such characteristics within art do not necessarily equate to a repetition of the same thing; instead they can represent the creation of a new order of things. Furthermore, we do not have to limit our analysis of patterns to a decorative and architectural perspective; we can also discuss them through a social and cultural point of view. In such regard, this research argues for the contribution patterns can make as a ‘difference’. Simple patterns contain a contemporary aspect today because they can be found in everyday life. These patterns are closely related to architecture and design, and thus to the consumptive aspect, and have further been simplified with industrial development to highlight their functional character; but the meanings they have today can be interpreted in multiple ways. This in turn is a quality particular to modernity. This research re-interprets the modern styles of patterns as holding meanings of the structure of the repetitive modern daily lives, as well as recognizable objects of pattern; and thereby discovers a new form of beauty within the artificial and consumerist traits of modernity.
