The purpose of this study was to examine the perception of child rights of mothers who had two years old children and then look into the difference between their perception of importance of child rights and their level of practice. In addition, the relationship between mother's perception of child rights and parental intelligence was looked into. For this, study questions were established as follows:
First, 'What are the perception of child rights, level of practice and parental intelligence of mothers who have children in infancy?' and 'What difference do mother's demographic features make?'
Second, 'What is the difference between mother's perception of child rights and their level of practice?'
Third, 'What is the relationship between mother's perception of child rights, level of practice and parental intelligence?'
Study subjects were mothers who had children of 2 years old and they were randomly sampled from Gyeonggi, Seoul, Daejeon, Gimhae City and Jeju-do. A questionnaire survey of them was carried out and 460 responses were collected and used in study analysis. As for the questionnaire, the author modified/supplemented the questionnaire used in Lee Ji-yeong's study (2011) on 'Child-care Teacher's Perception of Young Child Rights', according to the aim of this study, and the questionnaire was examined through preliminary test and specialist's verification. In order to test parental intelligence, the author modified/supplemented the questionnaire developed by Lee Seon-ae (2013) on the basis of modifying 'the Parental Intelligence Scales (PIS)' by Hyeon Mi-suk (2004), and the questionnaire was examined through preliminary test and specialist's verification. Data were analyzed with SPSS WIN 21.0 program. In order to examine study subject's demographic features, frequency analysis was carried out. In order to look into the demographic feature-oriented mean difference, t-test and one way ANOVA, two techniques of mean difference test, were carried out and Scheffe test was also carried out as a post-test. And in order to examine the relationship between mother's perception of rights, level of practice and parental intelligence, correlation analysis was carried out.
Study findings are as follows;
First, as for the perception of child rights and level of practice of mothers who had children in infancy, all the mothers crucially perceived/practiced rights to young children's survival and mother's protection/fostering of them, which were related to the protection and healthy growth of children. As for the demographic feature-oriented difference of mother's perception of rights, level of practice and parental intelligence, when mothers were older and young children attended in child-care centers, there was difference.
Second, as for mother's perception of child rights and level of practice for the children in infancy, the level of practice was lower than the perception of rights in all the areas, except the rights not to be discriminated.
Third, as for the relationship between mother's perception of child rights, level of practice and parental intelligence, there were significantly positive correlations in all the variables.
Study findings show that mother's perception of young child rights is high, but their level of practice falls short of their perception. In addition, mother's demographic features make significant difference in their perception of child rights, level of practice and parental intelligence, and there are positive correlations between mother's perception of child rights, level of practice and parental intelligence.
The author hopes study findings will be used as basic data on the development of educational programs of young child rights and the establishment of basis for desirable parenting roles for parents, in order to enhance social perception of young child rights and help the formation of good relationship between mother and children, thus making young children enjoy their rights fully.
