The purpose of this study was to examine the relative influence of ecological variables (organism variables and family environments variables) affecting the inclination of preschoolers for Internet game addiction and the selected structural relationship among the in formation ethics awareness and Internet game addiction inclination of preschoolers in an effort to determine the impact of the ecological variables on Internet game addiction inclination through information ethics awareness. The selected ecological variables were organism variables (self-regulation, self-esteem, hours of using the Internet and the time when one started to be on the Internet) and family environments variables (paternal attitude, paternal communication, maternal attitude, maternal communication and motivation
of allowing Internet use).
Two research questions were posed based earlier studies:
1. What influence do the ecological variables exert on the inclination of preschoolers for Internet game addiction?
2 . What are the structural relationships among the variables affecting the inclination of preschoolers for Internet game addiction?
And then research models were set up based on earlier studies as well.
The subjects in this study were the preschoolers and parents in nine different private kindergartens located in the cities of Busan and Ulsan.
A survey was conducted, and the answer sheets from 444 respondents were analyzed except for the incomplete ones. A multiple regression analysis and structural equation modeling were utilized to test the hypotheses of the study.
The findings of the study on Research Question 1 were as follows :
First, a hierarchical regression analysis was carried out to grasp the relative influence of the organism variables and the family environments variables on Internet game addiction inclination. As a result, the organism variables made a 9% prediction(R²) of Internet game addiction inclination. When the family environments variables were inputted into Mode l(Model 2), that made a 32% prediction of it(F=l 0.49, p<.001).
And then a stepwise regression analysis was made to find out about the relative influence of the variables that turned out significant in Model 2:
motivation of allowing Internet use, amusement/resting, self-regulation, autonomous maternal attitude, understanding and awareness of the motivation of allowing Internet use and autonomous paternal attitude. As a result , these variables made a 30% pr e diction (R²) of Internet game addiction inclination. Motivation of allowing Internet use and amusement/resting made the most pre diction(18%, R²) of Internet game addiction inclination, followed by self-regulation(6%, R²), autonomous maternal attitude (3%, R²), understanding and awareness of the motivation of allowing Internet use (2%, R²) and autonomous paternal attitude (1 %, R²).
The findings of the study on Research Question 2 about the structural relationships among motivation of allowing Internet use, self?regulation, autonomous paternal attitude and in formation ethics awareness that affected the Internet game addiction inclination of the preschoolers were as follows.
First, motivation of allowing Internet use had a direct impact(.418) on Internet game addiction inclination, and didn’t exercise any direct influence on in formation ethics aware ness. In other words, in formation ethics awareness didn’t have any mediating effects on the relationship between motivation of allowing Internet use and Internet game addiction inclination.
Second, as a result of analyzing the relationship among self?regulation, information ethics aware ness and Internet game addiction inclination , the self-regulation of the preschoolers affected their information ethics awareness in a direct way(.365), and it didn’t have any direct impact on Internet game addiction inclination. Their information ethics awareness exerted a direct influence(-.586) on Internet game addiction inclination. Self-regulation had an indirect impact(-.214) on Internet game addiction inclination through information ethics awareness. In other words, information ethics awareness had a perfect mediating effect on the relationship between self-regulation and Internet game addiction inclination.
Third, as a result of analyzing the relationships among autonomous paternal attitude, information ethics awareness and Internet game addiction inclination, autonomous paternal attitude had a direct impact (.505) on information ethics aware ness, and had no direct impact on Internet game addiction inclination. The information ethics awareness of the preschoolers exerted a direct influence(-.586) on their Internet game addiction inclination, and autonomous paternal attitude had an indirect impact (-.296) on the Internet game addiction inclination of the preschoolers through their information ethics aware ness. In other words, information ethics awareness had a perfect mediating effect on the relationship between autonomous parental attitude and Internet game addiction inclination.
Finally, as a result of analyzing the relationship between the information ethics awareness and Internet game addiction inclination of the preschoolers, information ethics awareness exercised a direct influence(-.586) on Internet game addiction inclination.
In conclusion, Internet game addiction inclination was under the largest influence of both of the family environments variables and the organism variables at the same time, and the family environments variables were more influential, followed by the organism variables. Among the subfactors of the family environments variables and the organism variables, motivation of allowing Internet use and amusement/resting made the most pre diction of it, followed by self-regulation, autonomous maternal attitude, understanding and awareness of the motivation of allowing Internet use and autonomous paternal attitude. When the structural relationships and influence of motivation of allowing Internet use, self-regulation, autonomous paternal attitude and information ethics awareness that affected the Internet game addiction inclination of the preschoolers were analyzed, motivation
of allowing Internet use had a direct impact on Internet game addiction inclination. But information ethics awareness had a perfect mediating effect on the relationship among self regulation, autonomous paternal attitude and Internet game addiction inclination.
