Glass has been used in the Korean peninsula since the use of Tubular bead in Buyeo Hapsong-ri. Particularly, Glass beads and vessels used in ancient times have been excavated and studied. Glass vessels are mentioned as a major trading good exchanged through the silk road, which explains our interaction with the Western World. In contrast, glass beads are not studied extensively as glass vessels, although it is excavated more than other relics.
Although the external features of glass beads are simple, the combination of raw materials differ widely and reflect the period and location of the manufacturer. Thus, the understanding of glass beads should not only be based on the external features but also extend to the analysis of chemical composition. In this article, we examined the external features (color, size), and the technical features (chemical composition, production techniques) of hwan-ok(丸玉, bead), which is a type of glass beads. Also, the possibility of trading routes that are not limited to the Korean Peninsula is studied to address the ‘manufacture’ and ‘distribution’ of glass beads.
First, This dissertation pinpointed the timeline and examined the chemical composition, color, production techniques, and size of glass beads that are found central to southern region of the Korean Peninsula, which were previously studied by its chemical composition. Conclusions were: First, the change in glass beads shift from Potash Glass to Soda Glass and this change can be divided into three steps. Second, there is a possibility that the Beakje region and the Silla-Gaya region had different transaction routes. Third, the Drawn technique was the major production technique. Fourth, the Drawn technique was completed at an early period and used for prolonged periods of time.
Next, This dissertation investigated the possibility that glass beads were manufactured in the Korean Peninsula. It can be concluded that the Moulded technique was used in the Korean Peninsula; however, there was low probability that the Drawn technique was used. In terms of chemical composition, the shift from Potash Glass to Soda Glass is not confined to the Korean Peninsula but extends to other parts of East Asia and South East Asia. Thus, there is low probability that the Drawn technique was used in the Korean Peninsula.
To induce the origin of glass beads based on chemical composition, Potash Glass originates from South Asia, South East Asia, and Southern China; whereas, Soda Glass originates from South Asia South East Asia. Particularly, there is high probability that the manufacturing region is related to the Maritime Road, which is a part of the Silk Road. This shows that glass beads were traded between South Asia, South East Asia, and East Asia. In China, glass beads were imported along with other goods as the demand for Southern products rose.
Glass beads were imported to ancient Korean Peninsula in large amounts because of the high preference as mentioned in the Samkukj Wiseo DongiJeon(『三國志』魏書 東夷傳). Excavation sites show that glass beads were used as necklace, chest decoration and hair decoration; thus, we can induce that there was a subject, transaction course, and final destination of glass beads. The interaction between these factors were interactive and complex not a simple, linear relationship.
