This article is aimed to analyze of the process which Baekje(百濟) came and developed into system of state through the chronology of Baekje archaeological materials. To do this, at first it examined the consistency of existing chronology system by performing the form classification of porcelain of Six Dynasties(六朝瓷器), horse Harness of Three Yans(三燕馬具) of China and Goguryeo(高句麗) Wadang(瓦當). As a result, horse trappings(騎乘用馬具) was the chronological materials that could embrace northeast China of that period as well as the period of Three Kingdoms. At the same time, it was performed typology about the harness of Goguryeo, Gaya(伽倻) and Baekje, and inter compared, there by suggesting them as the standard data of that period. As a result of cross chronology between the era of Horse trappings(騎乘用馬具) of early period and Silla(新羅)·Gaya archaeological material, the chronology of Baekje archaeological data was arrived at the result that was distinct from existing chronology based on porcelain of Six Dynasties(六朝).
All porcelain of Six Dynasties corresponded to Baekje was dated after the middle of the 4th century, except only one piece of Celadon Bowl(靑瓷盌) excavated in Pungnabtoseong(風納土城) and dated at about 2/4 quarter of 4th century, early period of Eastern Jin Dynasty. Also coin-patterned pottery(錢文陶器) dated as the artifact of Eastern Wu Dynasty(東吳)·Western Jin Dynasty(西晉) in existing orthodoxy turned out to be the type on late period of Eastern Jin Dynasty(東晋)~Liu-Song(劉宋) considering to the form of the pottery, a method of glazing, a color of glaze and making method. Therefore porcelain of Six Dynasties corresponded to Baekje period was the artifact obtained in the process of ambassador exchange with Eastern Jin Dynasty and Southern Dynasties(南朝) that was being continued after 27 years of King Geunchogo(372), the year of sending an envoy to Eastern Jin Dynasty.
In the late of 4th century Baekje had sovereignty connecting from Han River area(漢江流域) to Asan Bay(牙山灣), Miho Stream(美湖川) area and Chungju(忠州). In the mid to late 4th century the change in daily pottery, tombs and grave goods began to appear. The change of pottery was the introduction of paddling pattern pottery(打捺文土器) production system of reducing flame firing to daily pottery of oxidizing flame firing. Relatively larger tombs started to be erected in the same cemetery, horse trappings(騎乘用馬具)began to be buried.
The time from the late 4th century to the first part of 5th century was the stage that Baekje completed the state system. The establishment of settlement(城園聚落) such as Pungnabtoseong, enlargement of the tomb, the establishment of the pottery called Hansung style throws a sidelight on it. In particular the castellation of a large castle like Pungnabtoseong implies that economic base and a political structure that could control it had developed into state stage. porcelain of Six Dynasties made in China represents the fact that Baekje sent an envoy to and made an exchange with China in this stage. In the mid - 5th century, Baekje expanded its sovereignty to Guem River area(錦江流域). The prevalent pottery generalized down to paddling pattern pottery and pottery production system was completely unified into the stage equipped with a type of Hansung style pottery. In this stage pottery Hajiki styled pottery(土師器系) excavated in Hansung area and dated at the first half of the middle of the Tumulus period of the Japan suggests that Baekje made an direct or indirect exchange with Wae(倭) of the Japan in the first half of the 5th century.
In the mid – to – late 5th century, Stairway style Stone-filed tombs(階段式積石塚) was erected in the Hansung central, High mound tomb(高塚古墳) such as stone chamber tomb with horizontal entrance and Great pit-style stone burial(大型石槨墓) was erected in surrounding area. This distinction between the Hansung central and its provinces on the type of tomb allude to stratification between the Hansung central and the provinces. In addition elite grave goods such as bronze Official crowns(冠帽), Shoes(飾履) and porcelain of Six Dynasties excavated in a tomb of provincial head suggest that stratification in the provinces was completed with the political relevance of the Hansung central.
In the late of 5th century stone chamber tomb with horizontal entrance discovered in Gyeonggi-do that was surrounding of Hansung was also erected in Gongju(公州), Chungcheong region. This means that stone chamber tomb with horizontal entrance settled as major type of tomb of Baekje at the period of Woonjin(熊津). However the fact that pit burial(土壙墓) was still erected means that the use of the type of tomb according to the rank was strict. Mounds of the site at Suchon-ri(水村里), Gongju and the site at Songwon-ri(松院里), Yeongi(燕岐), the site at Songdam-ri(松潭里 ), Yeongi dated at the period of Woongjin, not the period of Hansung presented in existing common opinion.
In the site of the Hansung central such as Pungnabtoseong and Mongchontoseong(夢村土城) Baekje pottery of Hansung style was found to be excavated until the first quarter of the 6th century. It is the attestive data that after transference of the capital the ownership of Hansung area still belonged to Baekje, although Hansung fell temporarily to King Jangsu(長壽王) of Goguryeo and Baekje transferred the capital to Woongjin in 475. This correspond with the fact confirmed by the article in 『The Chronicles of the Three States(三國史記)』 that Hansung was the territory of Baekje until the first year(523) of King Seong(聖王) of Baekje. Through the fact that starting with the first quarter of the 6th century Hansung style Baekje Pottery was not found in north of Asan Bay area and Han River area, the time of Goguryeo had sovereignty over the area from the Han River to Asan Bay was after the first quarter of 6th century.
