The purpose of this study is to provide the understanding and information on nurturing the child by father and mother according to the changes in the contemporary society by comparing and analyzing the difference in the nurturing attitude, disciplinary style and the recognition of the child's problem behavior by mother and father.
To achieve the purpose of the study, following research subjects were selected.
Research subjectⅠ. What difference does exist in the nurturing attitude between mother and father?
Research subject Ⅱ. What difference does exist in the disciplinary style between mother and father?
Research subject Ⅲ. What difference does exist in the recognition of the child's problem behavior between mother and father?
To investigate the nurturing attitudes, disciplinary style and the recognition of the child's problem behavior by mother and father, the questionnaire was selected and the questionnaire survey was conducted over 6 weeks from July 14, 2014 to August 22. The questionnaire survey was conducted in the manner that the questionnaires were distributed to the family through the children that their mothers and fathers could answer respectively after the researcher visited the institution personally and explained the purpose of the research and the questionnaire to the director of the institution and the teachers in charge. Total 440 questionnaires were distributed and total 354 questionnaires were collected representing the recovery rate of 80.46%; 175 questionnaires from fathers and 179 questionnaires from mothers. Excluded the 20 questionnaires, which only one of the parents answered or were answered insincerely, 334 questionnaires, that is, 176 pairs were selected and analyzed as the research subject.
In this study, the research data were collected using following questionnaire and tools. First, to measure the nurturing attitude of the parents, the test tool, which was made by Lee Won-Young (1983) translating the Maternal Behavior Research Instrument (MRBI) by Shaefer. For the disciplinary style of the parents, the scale by Lee Dong-Hee (2004), which was made by translating and testing the validity of PSD (Parenting Style and Dimension) by Clazada and Eyberg (2002), was used. For the recognition of the child's problem behavior, the tools made by Seo Su-Gyoung, which was translated the Preschool Behavior Questionnaire (PBQ). To test the sublevel reliability of each tool, the inter-item consistency, the value of Cronbach's α was calculated from the research data collected using the SPSS 18.0 program and to identify the general characteristics of the research subjects, the frequency and the percentage were calculated, and to compare the difference in recognizing the problem behaviors between father and mother, the t-test was conducted by calculating the mean and standard deviation.
The results of this study according to the research tasks are as follows.
First, in the results of analyzing the overall tendency and the difference in the nurturing attitudes of the parents, father represented to have affective and autonomous nurturing attitude while mother represented to have controlled and rejective nurturing attitude.
Second, in the results of analyzing the overall tendency and the difference in the disciplinary style of the parents, both father and mother used the disciplinary method of logical explanation, oppressive physical punishment, permissive discipline in order, and for the permissive disciplinary style, the fathers represented to use it more than mother.
Third, in the results of analyzing the overall tendency and the difference in the recognition of child's problem behavior by the parents, both father and mother recognized the most problematic behavior when the child showed the hostile-aggressive actions, anxiety, hyperactive-discursiveness in order, and when the hyperactivity-discursiveness were shown from the child, mother recognized it more problematic than father.
In the results of this study, there exist the significant difference in the nurturing attitude between fathers and mother, and father represented to have affective and autonomous nurturing attitude while mother has controlled and rejective nurturing attitude. The tendency in recognizing the child's problem behavior was consistent but it represented that father performed the permissive disciplinary style more while mother recognized the hyperactive-discursive behavior as more problematic. The results of this study are deemed to provide the basic information for the nurturing of the mother and father according to the changes in the contemporary society.
