According to the flow of demands in the present age which increases the needs of creativity and personality education, storytelling becomes a topic socially such as introducing in the first and second grades math textbooks of elementary school and attracts public attention as a teaching and learning method. Lots of researches are in the process to improve ability of children to enjoy art works and achieve the purpose to foster emotional development related to storytelling by accepting this in the area of elementary art education. The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of storytelling on fostering emotional development in art appreciation activities for elementary school students by borrowing storytelling as a part of art appreciation activities.
For this, the researcher examined the theoretical background of storytelling and application method for art appreciation activities and adapted an art appreciation activity program of total 15 sessions for 80 minutes once or twice a week targeting one class in the sixth grade of W Elementary School located in Seoul G Office of Education. The research results were analyzed quantitatively due to statistical verification after pre and post-test but it was paralleled qualitative analysis to analyze observations of the researcher and reports and journals of students to reflect practicability and durability in life and supplementing the limitation of variables of diversity of linguistic ability and invisible emotional expressive ability.
The results of this study are summarized as follows:
First, it was improved the emotional expressive ability of children after performing art appreciation activities through storytelling. As a result to analyze observations, it was improved emotional expressive ability by developing stories from their experiences or empathy for the characters in the celebrated paintings and the artists. In addition, it was possible to verify to enable abundant linguistic expressions by imitating and developing words used by teacher or friends unconsciously.
Second, after performing art appreciation activities through storytelling, children could comprehend and perceive their emotions precisely. According to the reports and journals of children and daily records of the researcher with the results to measure the examination, it was appeared that children who used to answer ‘I have no idea’ about others’ or their own emotions used metaphorical expressions such as ‘it feels like a balloon is popping’ or sentences to perceive emotions such as ‘my parents are just satisfying to see I am having some foods’ frequently.
Third, the students became participate actively and initiatively in art appreciation activities. Children who did not show particular interests in a prejudiced way that it was boring or uninteresting told their opinions such as ‘it was time to share my own and real experiences’ and ‘time to imagine stories freely’ etc, so it was possible to know that the perception of appreciation activities became different.
The significance of this study is not stop studying art appreciation teaching plan applying storytelling like previous studies but to verify the effect of storytelling on improvement of emotional linguistic expressive ability and perception ability of children qualitatively and quantitatively, and furthermore, it is need follow-up discussions and studies such as concrete training plans to develop ability of teachers and art appreciation activity programs through storytelling which can apply according to the level of students.
