As literature reflects various aspects of life and also people’s needs in a certain period, learners can think about their own lives and needs and also have chances to meditate and look back on their lives while reading literature. And lately, such value of literature is being highlighted, so people are paying attention to the methods of education that can help students to examine themselves and form righteous values through literature.
This researcher thinks that picture books will be effective for personality education targeting elementary school higher graders and aims to find out methods of personality education applying them to real class. For this, the study forms its basic theoretical background through research on methods of personality education applying literature and also research on picture books. And based on the theoretical background gained through that research, the researcher intends to devise a teaching-learning model for personality education using picture books and apply it to class.
Chapter Ⅱ deals with the relations between picture books and personality education. And before actually conducting personality education utilizing picture books, it examines the characteristics of picture books. As investigating the meaning and characteristics of picture books and their themes and educational value, it also figures out the characteristics and educational value of picture books as a genre and discusses how they can be utilized in personality education based on that. Next, it looks into personality and personality education. It defines personality, the object to be cultivated in this study, and discusses the necessity, meaning, and methods of personality education by synthesizing various discussions about it. Lastly, it examines the relations between picture books and personality education. Through this, it discusses how picture books can be associated with personality education and lays the ground to use picture books for personality education.
To devise methods of personality education using picture books, Chapter Ⅲ analyzes existing teaching-learning models related with literature and extracts implications. And based on that, it designs a teaching-learning model for personality education using picture books and discusses the activities and characteristics of the model according to the procedure. Also, using this teaching-learning model, it sets up the criteria to choose picture books needed for the actual class to select appropriate picture books. And by applying the teaching-learning model devised, this researcher utilized those picture books at the class during creative activity hours to 26 fifth graders at Daejeon D Elementary School where he is presently working. Total 12 sessions were provided through total six times, for two hours as block time. After finishing the class, students’ questionnaire sheets, response sheets, discussion and debate sheets, post-activity sheets, and the teacher’s observation records collected during their activities in the class were analyzed to extract how the students’ personality had changed concretely.
As a result, the researcher has found that the class conducted by the teaching-learning model for personality education applying picture books influences students effectively in terms of righteous personality cultivation and behavioral change. The method of personality education using picture books did induce the students to understand and reflect on righteous personality and exert effects on helping them to lead such responses to actual behavior.
And this study has found that the method of personality education using picture books is, in fact, effective in the field of personality education. This thesis is significant in that it has devised a detailed method of personality education that can help teachers to perform personality education effectively for their students at school by using the characteristics of picture books that can be very helpfully used for personality education. Based on the significance of this paper, it is expected that this study will be able to contribute to improving personality education at elementary school.
