Abstract

The purpose of this study is to clarify the creation principle of Yi, Choon-Poong Jeon from the viewpoint of The Book of Changes. The results of this study are following.

Firstly, this study shows that the personality of the characters in the story can be analyzed using the principle of Five Elements(五行) based on each character’s name. Also, the behavior of the character can be explained using principle of Sasang(四象).

Secondly, the main plot of this story is shown to follow Hexagram 61(中孚卦) among 64 Hexagrams(六十四卦). That is, the plot of this story has close correlation with Hexagram 61. Also, the subject of the story can be analyzed using Hexagram 61.

Thus, we can understand that the author utilizes the principle of Five Elements, Sasang, and 64 Hexagrams to create the personality and behavior of the characters and construct the main plot of this story. On the ground of this, the principle of The Book of Changes can be a new method of reading Classical Korean Literature.

If this method of reading is introduced in the classroom, this leads to enhance student’s ability to read literature creatively.
