      ABSTRACT

Eating attitudes and psychosocial aspects in girls with precocious puberty

      Choi Min-Seon
      Advisor : Prof. Kim Eun-Young M.D. Ph.D
      Department of Medicine,
      Graduate School of Chosun University

Objectives Little is known about the impact of precocious puberty on psychosocial aspects. We evaluated the associations between body image, eating attitude and depression in children with precocious puberty.

Methods 82 precocious pubertal patients aged 7-12 years were compared with 37 age- matched controls. The patients with precocious puberty were, furthermore, divided into two subgroups according to their BMI: Normal-Weight (BMI<85 percentile) and overweight (BMI≥85 percentile).

Results Eating attitudes were not different between precocious pubertal patients and the controls. Overweight group, however, had more food intake than normal-weight group(p = 0.028). Precocious pubertal group had a more obese body image than the controls(p = 0.003). Overweight group also had a more obese body image than the Normal weight group(p = 0.011). Overweight group were unhappy with their weight(p < 0.001) and body type(p = 0.007) compared to Normal weight group. Precocious pubertal patient group had an exaggerated perception about their breast development. This, however, was not statistically significant. Overweight group have a exaggerated perception about their breast development(p = 0.002). That is statistically significant. The results from the depression scale were not different between precocious pubertal patients and the control group. No differences were found with their depression scale between the Normal weight group and Overweight group. Their age and dissatisfaction about their height or weight did not have any impact on their result of depression scale. Their body type dissatisfaction(p < 0.05) and exaggerated perception about their breast development(p < 0.001) seemed related to depression scale.

Conclusion Children with precocious puberty can develop a more obese body image than normally developing children. Many of children with precocious puberty have an exaggerated perception about their breast development. Body type dissatisfaction and an exaggerated perception about one's breast development seems to be related to depression scale. Precocious pubertal patients are at risk of having distorted opinion about their body image and breast development. This study reveals how body image is correlated with depression scale in patients with precocious puberty.
